The nose offers more evolution in its cedar tobacco blackcurrant smoky aromas. The wine possesses a wonderful inner-core of sweet fruit and a multi-layered personality. Rich and full-bodied with sweet tannin in the finish this is a generous full-bodied youthful yet accessible Cabernet that should drink well for 20 more years. In tasting through all of Abreu's commercially available wines I was struck by how consistent in quality they are. The exceptional 1991 and 1992 have been followed by phenomenal wines in 1993 1994 1995 and 1996. Most of these wines are 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Cabernet Franc. The only exception is the 1995 which is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 5% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wines are worth owning I am putting my money where my mouth is. Expansive with terrific intensity purity and overall symmetry it has noticeable tannin in the finish. I know it's like splitting hairs but the 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch may be a touch better than the 1995. The alcohol level 14.2% is higher and the pH ranks alongside that attained by the great Bordeaux vintages i.e. 3.8 and above in years such as 1982 and 1990. Perhaps that is why a taster's palate can get lost in the wine's mid-palate and length. The color is opaque black\/purple. The wine possesses a nose of creme de cassis and blackberry\/blueberry liqueur. The oak has been soaked up completely by the wine's extraction and richness. The finish lasts for 40+ seconds. This is an extremely multi-dimensional profoundly concentrated awesome Cabernet Sauvignon that should deliver untold levels of pleasure complexity and most importantly joy for at least 25-30 years. These are riveting wines produced by a former Wine Advocate Hero of the Year. The wine's aromatics soar from the glass and in the mouth the bouquet's promise is fulfilled. A thick juicy black fruit character comes across in cascades of fruit glycerin and extract. All of this has been buttressed by sweet tannin and good acidity. A voluptuously-textured blockbuster yet remarkably harmonious wine it is one of the finest efforts of the vintage. Full-bodied and extremely youthful with plenty of tannin sweet rather than astringent and terrific length this is a classic beautifully balanced intensely flavored wine. Give it another 3-4 years of cellaring and drink it over the subsequent 2 decades. In tasting through all of Abreu's commercially available wines I was struck by how consistent in quality they are. The exceptional 1991 and 1992 have been followed by phenomenal wines in 1993 1994 1995 and 1996. Most of these wines are 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Cabernet Franc. The only exception is the 1995 which is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 5% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wines are worth owning I am putting my money where my mouth is. The wine is both silky and powerful with impeccable harmony among its elements. Although the 1994 will have a precocious flattering up-front appeal it will not begin to strut its full potential for another 5-6 years. It is a 25-30 year wine. In tasting through all of Abreu's commercially available wines I was struck by how consistent in quality they are. The exceptional 1991 and 1992 have been followed by phenomenal wines in 1993 1994 1995 and 1996. Most of these wines are 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Cabernet Franc. The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon another great wine from an often maligned vintage boasts a fabulous dark purple color as well as sweet jammy toasty black fruits fruitcake cedar and black truffle-like smells. Packed with extract and glycerin this is an expansive chewy pure Cabernet that should be cellared for another 2-3 years after its release in 1997 it will easily last until 2025. This is great stuff! In tasting through all of Abreu's commercially available wines I was struck by how consistent in quality they are. The exceptional 1991 and 1992 have been followed by phenomenal wines in 1993 1994 1995 and 1996. Most of these wines are 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Cabernet Franc. The only exception is the 1995 which is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 5% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. A prodigious wine, with complex notes of subtle barbecue smoke intermixed with blueberry pie, black currant liqueur, acacia flowers, lead pencil shavings, and sweet foresty floor notes, this wine builds incrementally with layer upon layer of fruit, glycerin and concentration. The finish goes well past a minute, and the wine is full-bodied and deep, with wonderfully sweet tannin. It is still an adolescent in terms of its total evolution, but it is irresistible simply because of the flawless nature of the wine and incredible perfume and flavor intensity. Simply amazing! Both of these wines are adolescents, and probably won't peak for another 5-8 years and keep for 30-40. Last year I mentioned that the 2011 Proprietary Red Madrona Ranch was one of the rare Abreu wines that showed a little herbaceousness, but that has completely aged out. There is now a forest floor intensity to this full-bodied, opaque purple-colored 2011. After spending 26 months in 100% new oak, it exhibits great fruit, concentration and intensity. The fact that Abreu and Grimes do malolactic in their new oak barrels seems to integrate the wood better than at many wineries. It is certainly a key to understanding the wine's complexity. It is a sumptuous unctuously-textured fabulously concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon that hits all the sweet spots on the palate and puts the olfactory senses into overdrive. The wine smells and tastes perfect. It is a compelling effort that one day will be considered part of a small group of elite California Cabernets that may be rewriting the definition of greatness in Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1997 boasts an opaque black\/purple color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of roasted meats scorched earth blackberry creme de cassis minerals and toast. The soaring aromatics are matched by a phenomenally intense seamless palate with full-bodied opulence exquisite purity and symmetry and a multidimensional finish that lasts for nearly a minute. This wine will be delicious when released next year and will last for 25-30 years. Full-bodied and extremely youthful with plenty of tannin sweet rather than astringent and terrific length this is a classic beautifully balanced intensely flavored wine. Give it another 3-4 years of cellaring and drink it over the subsequent 2 decades. In tasting through all of Abreu's commercially available wines I was struck by how consistent in quality they are. The exceptional 1991 and 1992 have been followed by phenomenal wines in 1993 1994 1995 and 1996. Most of these wines are 95% Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance Cabernet Franc. The only exception is the 1995 which is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 5% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wines are worth owning I am putting my money where my mouth is.
