Bodega Alto Moncayo is a Spanish winery in Campo de Borja, known for exclusively making wines from the grape Garnacha. It was founded in 2002 as a partnership between Andalucia producer Jorge Ordóñez, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland, and Bodegas Borsao, one of the largest and most influential producers in the Campo de Borja appellation.
The Alto Moncayo vineyards cover 92 hectares (227 acres) around the town of Borja in the heart of the DO. These vineyards are located in the foothills of the Moncayo Massif: namely Ainzón, Fuendejalón and Tabuenca. The vines sit at altitudes that range between 1600-2600ft (490-790m) above sea level. The soil has a high stone content and is made up of limestone, marl and slate, a composition that makes for excellent drainage and encourages deep root sets toward a layer of water-retaining clay. The climate of the region overall is a cool, dry continental climate that is beneficially influenced by both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, depending on the season.
Alto Moncayo makes three wines, all from old-vine Garnacha of varying ages. The oldest vines are as much as 100 years old and are used in the Aquilon cuvée, with slightly younger average ages in the vines harvested for the Alto Moncayo and the Veraton expressions.

| Rating | 93 RP - The 2011 Aquilon is probably the ripest ever produced, from an extremely warm vintage, which resulted in a wine with 16.5% alcohol. This is also different from all other vintages because of the ripeness, the aromas that jump from the glass, extremely ripe and balsamic, with a marked style, ripe, thick, heady and hedonistic with strong menthol aromas (Tiger balm!), aromatic herbs, licorice, roasted meat. The palate shows a real blockbuster of a wine, full-bodied, ripe, with abundant, fine-grained tannins, a bodybuilder of a wine. Perhaps it is not a wine style for everyone, not my favorite style, but for sure it is a great wine. If you like this heady, ripe style of Garnacha, this is really a great expression of it. |
