Cayuse Vineyards is a wine producer based in the Walla Walla Valley on the border of Oregon and Washington. Its focus is on the Rhône grape varieties, and in particular Syrah, wines from which have earned several 100-point ratings from The Wine Advocate.
The company was founded in 1997 by Christophe Baron, a Frenchman from a Champagne-making family near Charly-sur-Marne. All of the vineyards owned by Cayuse are within the newly formed Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA, which is wholly in Oregon. However, Cayuse continues to label its wines with the broader Walla Walla AVA, which is usually associated with the Washington wine industry, though it straddles both states.
Other top wines in the portfolio include the En Chamberlin Vineyard and Bionic Frog Syrahs, and the Impulsivo Tempranillo. The majority of Cayuse wines are sold to members of the mailing list, places on which are keenly sought.

| Robert Parker | RP 99 - The 2007 Bionic Frog Syrah surrenders a splendid aromatic array of forest floor herbs olives bacon underbrush blueberry and black cherry. This is followed by a voluptuous wine with gobs of succulent fruit impeccable balance enough fine-grained tannin to evolve for 5-7 years and a lengthy seductive finish. Give it 5-7 years of additional cellaring and drink it from 2015 to 2027. A cult of personality seems to have developed in Washington over the past couple of years. Whenever the name Christophe is mentioned everyone immediately knows of whom you are talking. The man himself Christophe Baron continues to find new and interesting things to do. His latest vineyard project is well underway on hillsides not far from his present location. His estate just on the Oregon side of the Walla Walla AVA consists of five small but distinct vineyards (41 acres in total - with more on the way). Syrah and the Bordeaux varietals are the principal focus but some of the finest parcels of Tempranillo and Grenache grown in the USA are on this estate. Unfortunately there will be no more varietally bottled Viognier which will now be used only as a blending grape. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and much of the estate is planted on rootstock to prepare for the day when phylloxera works its way through Walla Walla. The wines are all fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled unfined and unfiltered. |
