2003 Amuse Bouche Proprietary Red - 93 pts!

Amuse Bouche is a Napa Valley winery that was established in 2002 by John Schwartz and prominent Napa winemaker Heidi Barrett. The winery's flagship Pomerol-inspired Merlot was created in response to Napa's famously elusive Cult Cabernet wines. Each label features a commissioned piece of art by a prominent artist.

The first vintage of Amuse Bouche was limited to 3000 bottles, and was produced from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown in Oakville. Since then, production has increased to around 8400 bottles a year, and the grapes are now sourced from the eastern hills of Rutherford. The wine is aged in new oak barrels from a combination of French cooperages, including Taransaud, Radoux and Gamba.

Rating As an epicurean, I particularly love the label on the 2003. A certain shyness in the aromatic profile belies some exuberant, enticing, complex flavors in this medium to full-bodied, lush, layered wine. The bouquet offers up hints of coffee beans, black currants, cherries, kirsch liqueur and spice. The wine is medium to full-bodied, lushly textured and opulent in the mouth, with no hard edges. The style of this 2003 suggests it was drinkable upon release, but it is aging gracefully. While not the biggest of the 2003s, it is an elegant, mid-weight effort to enjoy over the next decade. RP

Wine Spectator

Wine Spectator 93 WS -  Dark color, with wonderful perfumed cassis, currant and black cherry fruit that's openly aromatic. On the palate, the flavors are rich and polished, with a plush, dense texture and a long, intricate finish that picks up nuances of cedary oak and fresh earth. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. WS
