1994 Dalla Valle Maya Proprietary Red Magnum - 99 pts!
The Maya Proprietary red wine is usually a blend of 45% Cabernet Franc and 55% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1994 Maya may or may not turn out to be a perfect wine but it is unquestionably one of the most prodigious compelling young Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc wines I have tasted. The color is a dense opaque purple. Note the wine's sweetness pureness and layers of ripe black fruits dosed with spicy new oak smoke Asian spices and an underlying mineral component. The antithesis of a lightweight red wine this massive full-bodied glycerin-endowed super-concentrated wine has maintained its equilibrium despite its enormousness. The sweetness and silky tannin so characteristic of the 1994 vintage are present but I would opt for aging the 1994 Maya 5-7 years and drinking it over the following 25-30. RP
