2001 Benjamin Romeo Contador - 98 pts!

Bodega Contador is a modern wine producer in Rioja, Spain. Its flagship wine, Contador, is one of Spain's most consistently high-priced wines, on par with Pingus and Vega Sicilia. Made predominantly from Tempranillo and aged in French oak, Contador is known for being full-bodied, fruit-driven and rich.

The bodegas was established in 1995 when Artadi winemaker Benjamin Romeo purchased a cave in Rioja, and began to buy vineyards in the area to make his wine. The first vintage of Contador, made in Romeo's parents' garage was released in 1999, and the 2004 and 2005 vintages went on to receive 100-point scores from Robert Parker, cementing the wine's in-demand status.

Rating 98 RP - Romeo's flagship cuvee (only 200 bottles for the USA) is the fabulous 2001 Contador. Along with some of the Artadi offerings, it is as great a Rioja as one could ever hope to taste. Fashioned from three parcels of 80-year old, 70-year old, and 65-year old vines, it spends 12 months in new French oak prior to being bottled without fining or filtration. It boasts a dense purple color along with a sumptuous nose of melted chocolate, espresso roast, creme de cassis, cherries, and flowers. Dense and full-bodied as well as impeccably seamless, pure, and balanced, this is a beauty! There is no doubt that Benjamin Romeo is a perfectionist when it comes to winemaking. He worked at Artadi between 1985 and 2000, and now has his own small project where he makes limited quantities of super-expensive, but also high quality, limited production Rioja. RP
