2009 Schrader Cellars George III Beckstoffer Cabernet - 95 pts!
When you have extremely conscientious owners (Carol and Fred Schrader) combined with world-class winemaking (Thomas Rivers Brown), and an unimpeachable source for grapes (the first-growth terroir of the Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard), it should not be surprising that outstanding wines are produced. All three of these 100% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvees emerge from that magical tenderloin spot in the Oakville Corridor. You could probably have these three wines on twenty different occasions and reach a different qualitative order, but there is no doubt that any of the wines could be your favorite on any given day - they are that spectacular. During this period, all three were aged in 100% new French oak (which continues), all Darnajou barrels.

Rating 95 RP - The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon GIII Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard Clone 337 is a gorgeous, dark wine bursting with black fruit, leather, licorice and tar. The Georges III is dark, plush and totally inviting, with a seamless quality to the tannin that is striking for such a young wine. This is the most suave and accessible of the 2009s. If I were tempted to open a very young 2009 Schrader, this would be the bottle. The 2009 GIII is 100% clone 337 from the F Block. I’ll keep my notes on the 2009s brief, but as one can see, these are among the superstars of the vintage. I do not envision any of them meriting a perfect score, which will finally break the trifecta of perfection for the CCS, but these will all be mid to upper-90 point wines because they are that good. As Thomas Brown explained to me, it was a year of higher yields, cooler temperatures, and virtually all of the vineyards were harvested before the deluge arrived in mid-October. The 2009s are all made from the same Clones as the 2008s. I thought the three top cuvees were the T6, CCS and Schrader, but the RBS looks profound as well. The only wine that is perhaps lighter than expected is the George III. The 2009s should be more evolved, gorgeous to drink out of the gate, and last for 15-20 years as opposed to 30-40. RP
