1999 Domaine Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche Burgundy - 96 pts

Hubert Lignier is a family-owned domaine in Burgundy, producing both red and wines. The estate is located in Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits and is best known for its Pinot Noir wines from the grand cru vineyard Clos de la Roche. It is owned and run by the father-son duo Hubert and Laurent Lignier.

The estate is made up of around 9 hectares (22 acres) of vineyard land that ranges from the basic Bourgogne appellation to grand cru. Vineyard holdings are primarily located in the villages of Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Chambolle-Musigny, with newer vineyards acquired in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Pommard.

Robert Parker 96 RP - The 1999 Clos de La Roche is the darkest of Lignier's offerings, verging on being dark ruby-colored. It exhibits a black cherry, blackberry, licorice, and violet-scented nose that leads to its explosive, immensely flavorful character. Medium to full-bodied and pure, this fresh, sweet wine is packed to the gills with cherries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Ample yet highly delineated, it has a magnificently long, fruit-filled finish. RP

Burghound 94 BH - This is still relatively primary though there are the first traces of secondary development in evidence on the earthy and gamy red and dark pinot fruit aromas. There is excellent volume to the exceptionally rich, powerful and lush medium weight plus flavors that possess excellent finishing depth and length. There is so much richness that it could certainly be approached now with pleasure though I will continue to hold my bottles as there is some additional upside development potential remaining. Note that one other recent bottle displayed a noticeably lactic character on the nose and tired and flat flavors. Why I cannot say as the two bottles came out of the same case. Yet another bottle was like the first and absolutely brilliant.
