When prohibition hit and most wineries shuttered, Beaulieu Vineyard increased its business by fourfold by selling sacramental wine to the Catholic Church. After the repeal in 1933, Georges de Latour became dedicated to the research and innovation that would bring about his Rutherford Estate’s finest expression. In 1938, he traveled to France and met André Tchelistcheff, famed viticulturist and enologist who instituted the philosophy of continuous innovation in vineyard and winery to which we remain dedicated today. When he joined Beaulieu and tasted the de Latour family’s private wine – what they called “Private Reserve” – from the 1936 vintage, he insisted it be bottled and sold as the winery’s flagship offering. In 1940, Beaulieu Vineyard released the first vintage of Private Reserve and named it in our founder’s honor. The resulting wine became the first release of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that was destined to become Napa Valley’s first “cult” Cabernet.

Today we continue with that spirit of innovation to produce exceptional wines that stand among the world's finest. Compressed and lean in the mouth, with an angular, compact personality, it exhibits medium body, higher than normal acidity, and pronounced tannin. Although it is a good wine, I have the same reservations about it as I do many B.V. Private Reserves from the mid-eighties on - is there enough depth and fruit to balance out the wine's other components, particularly the high acidity, much of it added? It is not revealing any signs of aging as the color is healthy, but just how much charm and pleasure will emerge remains debatable. Spicy oak and new saddle leather characteristics lead to dusty, loamy soil, cherry and cassis notes. The wine reveals terrific balance as well as a hint of French oak (BV is no longer using American oak as it did in the 1970's, 1960's and 1950's). This is intense, with some minerality as well as sweet tannins and abundant fruit, glycerin and richness. I was stunned by how well this cuvee is currently showing. It is capable of lasting another two decades.
