I never tasted the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum (translated as “Holy of Holies”) before this trip, and I ended up purchasing a magnum to enjoy in Paris with friends. There are only 350 magnums produced from a vineyard of old vine Grenache planted in 1905. This wine was aged in one demi-muid for 12 months prior to being bottled with neither fining nor filtration. Much lighter in color (medium dark ruby) than any of the four previous cuvees, and it does not have the texture and pure weight of the Combe des Fous, Vieilles Vignes, or Deus-Ex Machina. It reminded me of the 1990 Rayas when that wine was 2-3 years of age. An extraordinary expression of old vine Grenache, it exhibits classic aromas of licorice and kirsch liqueur that are so intense they could fill a large room. Ethereal in the mouth, this is a profound example of how a wine of extraordinary concentration, multilayers of flavor, and remarkable intensity can be relatively light on its feet, never tasting heavy or tiring. This is an exceptional effort, but given how limited it is, and the fact that there are only magnums available, it will be about as difficult to find as it is getting a personal appointment with the Pope in Rome. The essence of Grenache, it is an elixir of extraordinary proportions, and another tour de force from this remarkable winery that has simply turned Chateauneuf du Pape on its side with the efforts they have produced since 2003. The Sanctum Sanctorum should easily evolve for 25-30+ years. Both vintages offers a smorgasbord of heavenly scents (kirsch liqueur, charcuterie, smoked duck, Chinese black tea, hoisin sauce, raspberries and loamy underbrush), huge amounts of glycerin, and a full-bodied mouthfeel. The Grenache component gives these wines a certain lightness of being despite their massive power, richness, unctuosity and alcoholic clout. Both the 2010 and 2009 are 30+ year wines and those lucky enough to taste them will agree the Sanctus Sanctorum is one of the most compelling wines made in the world. The 2009 seems slightly more evolved than the 2010, but both are monumental efforts that no doubt will be the wines of the vintage. Made from 60- to 100+-year-old vines (60% tank-aged Grenache and 40% Mourvedre aged in new and one-year-old oak barrels), from yields no larger than one half ton of fruit per acre, it boasts a saturated purple color as well as a surreal concoction of heavenly aromatic delights (creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, licorice, spring flowers, spice box, and smoke). The wine hits the palate with an extraordinary seamless display of incredibly rich, pure fruit, and a full-bodied, multilayered texture that nearly defies belief. It is almost an insult to try to articulate what this wine tastes like. My tasting notes ended with the words “great, great, and great.” This is a remarkable achievement even for such a famous vintage, and this 2007 is destined to be one of the legends of the new century. The finish lasts over 60 seconds, and the wine has the accessibility to be appreciated now, but it will not hit its peak for another 5-7 years, and will last at least 25+ years. It possesses upward of two decades of longevity, and the only wine in the vintage to come anywhere close to this level of quality, also from the same producer, is the Combe des Fous. Always one of the highlight visits during my time spent working in the Southern Rhone, Clos Saint-Jean, which includes over 100 acres of prime terroir in Chateauneuf du Pape (mostly in the south), is run by brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel, with consulting help from the incredibly talented Philippe Cambie. Releasing 5 Chateauneufs in top vintages, they also pair up with Manfred Krankl, of Sine Qua Non in California's Santa Barbara County, and release another high-end cuvee call Chimere. While the winemaking here is often labeled as modern, it is actually relatively traditional, with the Grenache almost always aged in tank and only the Mourvedre and Syrah seeing time in larger, 500-600 liter oak barrels, or demi-muids. In addition, the cuvees may also include small amounts of whole-cluster fermentation. The tannins are noticeable, but relatively silky. The most muscular and formidable 2010 in this portfolio, its expansiveness, mind-boggling richness and intensity, and 60-second finish are the stuff of legends. Forget this remarkable Chateauneuf du Pape for five years and drink it over the following thirty years. Since 2003, when Pascal and Vincent Maurel took over this estate after their father’s passing, Clos Saint-Jean has gone from strength to strength. They have always owned great vineyards, and they had the foresight to hire a brilliant consulting oenologist, Philippe Cambie. The result has been instant stardom, and a succession of world-class wines. Recently they also partnered with the California Central Coast's renowned Manfred Krankl of Sine Qua Non to produce another luxury cuvee of Chateauneuf du Pape from mostly Mourvedre called Chimere. A large estate for Chateauneuf du Pape (over 110 acres), Clos Saint-Jean's history dates back to 1900, with the first Maurel taking control in 1930. It offers an insane bouquet of cassis, kirsch and black raspberry intermixed with sweet licorice, toasted spice and ground pepper that's to die for. This is followed by a massive, full-bodied, seamless wine that has building tannin, no hard edges and a finish that won't quit. The only problem here is that it's almost impossible to get your hands on a bottle (there are roughly 200 magnums to go around). It's certainly in the same ballpark as the 2009 and 2010, and will have two decades of longevity, although it should be firing on all cylinders in 5-6 years. Forget it for 4-5 years and drink it over the following 3 decades. By the way, it is about 16% natural alcohol so it is actually less powerful than the 2011. It’s a massive, masculine and structured Chateauneuf du Pape that needs to be tasted to be believed. Cassis, creamy licorice, jammy blackberry and crushed flowers are only a few of the nuances here, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, incredible mid-palate depth and a blockbuster finish that just won’t quit. The level of concentration here surpasses just about every other wine in the vintage, and yet it never seems heavy, cumbersome or over-the-top. Give it 4-5 years and drink this spectacular effort over the following two decades.
