Late in 2011, the FUTOs completed the purchase of a property in the eastern hills of Stags Leap District. This 40 acre property included a 9 acre Cabernet vineyard planted in 1986. This is another beauty, slightly more restrained and less flamboyant compared to 2004, but built for the long haul. This wine should age for 20-25 years. Just a stone's throw down the hill from the Harlan Estate vineyard is a five-acre parcel of hillside vineyards, planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, owned by Tom and Kyle Futo. Formerly, this was the Oakford Estate Vineyard. The viticulture is overseen by the superstar in that field, David Abreu, and the winemaker is another renowned name, Mark Aubert. The first vintage to be released will be the 2004, which is only 100 cases, but then production jumps to 200 in 2005 and 500+ in 2006. Their goal is to produce just under 1,000 cases when everything comes into production. The site is beautiful, and there is considerable buzz about what's going on. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, a whopping 33% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, it boasts a dense purple color as well as a gorgeously sweet bouquet of blue and black fruits, spring flowers, and crushed rocks, full-bodied power allied to compelling elegance, and a layered, multidimensional personality. There is plenty of depth in this beauty, and it is no doubt capable of putting on lots of weight and complexity given the Cabernet Franc component. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 20-25 years. This small 12-acre vineyard on the western hillsides of Oakville has hit the ground running. Their debut release, 2004, has been followed by impressive wines in every subsequent vintage. Proprietor Tom Futo and winemaker Mark Aubert have quickly produced a thrilling group of wines. Sadly, only about 500 cases are produced currently, but the quantity should rise to 1,000 cases after the vineyard comes into full production. This is another beauty, slightly more restrained and less flamboyant compared to 2004, but built for the long haul. This wine should age for 20-25 years. Just a stone's throw down the hill from the Harlan Estate vineyard is a five-acre parcel of hillside vineyards, planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, owned by Tom and Kyle Futo. Formerly, this was the Oakford Estate Vineyard. The viticulture is overseen by the superstar in that field, David Abreu, and the winemaker is another renowned name, Mark Aubert. The first vintage to be released will be the 2004, which is only 100 cases, but then production jumps to 200 in 2005 and 500+ in 2006. Their goal is to produce just under 1,000 cases when everything comes into production.
