Even today, visiting Rayas is like taking a trip back in time; the estate did not even have electricity until the late 1980s. Emmanuel continues in the traditional style, while moving forward as the heralded winemaker of one of the world’s most sought-after wines. Here, in addition to creating the wines of Château Rayas, Emmanuel also produces Pignan, expressing a different approach to this unique terrior.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eComposed of three separate vineyards — Le Couchant, Le Levant and Le Coeur — Château Rayas occupies one of the most unique sites in the world. The estate is surrounded by towering pine trees (pignan in French) that monitor the airflow into the vineyards, and the vines are planted in very fine sand that regulates their temperature and maintains humidity around the roots. As for the 1990 I have had the good fortune to drink nearly three cases and it has been one of the triumphs of my cellar. A mere 1-2 years ago I enjoyed a succession of perfect \"100 point\" bottles but the last several bottles have merited 96-100 points perhaps revealing the direction of this wine's evolution. Nevertheless this is riveting stuff. A legendary Rayas made from extremely ripe Grenache it exhibits notes of over-ripe kirsch raspberries cherries game licorice and tobacco. This unctuously-textured thick juicy Chateauneuf must tip the scale at 15.5% alcohol. It is truly a Rhone Valley monument. As I wrote in my book The Wines of the Rhone Valley it would be a shame to go through life without tasting this wine. Sadly there are a number of fraudulent bottlings (both 750ml and magnums) in the marketplace but the real thing is one of the most phenomenally stuffed wines ever made. Dark ruby\/purple-colored with an over-ripe nose of black cherry jam kirsch liqueur raspberries and minerals this exceptionally full-bodied Chateauneuf du Pape boasts layers of concentration glycerin and alcohol (in excess of 15%). The massive alcohol is well-concealed by the wine's spectacular extract and density. Low in acidity and unbelievably sumptuous it is ideal for consuming now and over the next 10-15+ years. The quintessential Rayas it is one of the most hedonistic and compelling wines ever made. This wine was just released this year, with the 2008 coming on the market in the next few months. The 2007 is a relatively dark ruby\/purple-tinged wine, more intensely colored than most Rayas Chateauneufs tend to be, since they are made from 100% Grenache and color has never been one of their hallmarks. The extraordinarily youthful and still burgeoning aromatics of black raspberries, black cherries, truffles and licorice lead to a full-bodied, powerful Rayas with sweet tannin, adequate acidity, and an ethereal richness and unctuosity that delicately offers a sensual texture. It is full-bodied, concentrated and approachable, but won’t hit its peak for at least another 4-5 years and will last for 25 or more. This is a spectacular Rayas, the likes of which hasn’t existed at this qualitative level since 1995. I had previously written that I thought the 2005 was the greatest Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape made after 1995, but I think the 2007 may eclipse it. Perhaps it is a stylistic thing as the 2005 is a sturdier, more masculine style, and the 2007 is an opulent, voluptuous wine that is more reminiscent of the 1990, while the 2005 is similar to the 1995.
