Our first vineyard, Domaine du Docteur Rodgers surrounds the Rodgers’ home in Woodside, California. Planted in 1994, its first wines were produced in 1996. It is a single-acre, closely planted hilltop vineyard with 6,120 vines per acre. Evening fog helps provide ideal growing conditions.
The “clones” are actual Pinot Noir types grafted onto rootstocks that are chosen to match the soil, shun phylloxera, and produce low vigor. Vines are planted closely together for low yield and concentration. The clones come from Dijon, in Burgundy, and are certified to be genetically identical to great Burgundian clones. Each clone has an outstanding characteristic.
The founding owner, T,J, Rodgers’ overall objective for Clos de la Tech is a lofty goal! Namely, to produce a pinot noir to rival the greatest in the world — the top wine from Burgundy’s magnificent Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Presently selling for as much as $13,500 for a single bottle of the 2011 vintage, this iconic wine is the culmination of a few centuries of greatness. Whether Rodgers’ goal shows inspiration or delusion, Massey has a point when she explains the reason for their winery’s mission: “They’re the best. Who else can be your role model but the best?”
