Reminiscent of an old vine white Hermitage from Michel Chapoutier or a top Burgundy from Meursault-Perrieres Montrachet or Chevalier Montrachet it exhibits wonderful stone fruit\/smoky notes huge body and crisp acidity to buttress the enormous power and wealth of concentration. This is an extraordinarily singular expression of Chardonnay that must be tasted to be believed. The California wine that comes closest to it is Marcassin's Estate Chardonnay. I can only think of one or two other California producers who made anything close to the quality of this riveting Chardonnay in 2003. This Chardonnay tends to be aged in 100% new oak which is totally concealed and is bottled without fining or filtration. Consequently if it has just been shipped or moved it can reveal a slight haze. A gorgeous nose of wet rocks, white currants, flowers, pineapple, and honeysuckle are all present in this vivid, full-bodied, powerful wine that tastes like a Chevalier-Montrachet from France. Stunningly rich, pure, and long, this is another tour de force from Mark Aubert, who certainly has the Midas touch when it comes to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It should drink well for 5-8 years. Mark Aubert is on the move, leaving Colgin Winery in favor of working for the Bryant Family Vineyard, while at the same time producing some of the world's greatest Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. He seems to have a plate filled with both potential and stress. The bad news is that one of his suppliers decided his Chardonnays were just too profound for the Quarry Vineyard, and will no longer sell him fruit from that source, and in 2006, there was so little Reuling available, that cuvee was not made either. In short, there are two fewer Chardonnays for the 2006 vintage! Nevertheless, those who got on the mailing list and secured some of his 2005 Chardonnays have some of the finest Chardonnays ever made in California at their beck and call. This Chardonnay comes from a clone suitcased over from the Montrachet vineyard in Burgundy. There is no doubting the liquid minerality, striking honeyed citrus, white currant, hazelnut, and brioche notes are more French than California, but the power and richness are pure New World. An absolutely remarkable Chardonnay that is certainly one of the top half dozen or so Chardonnays I have ever tasted from California, this is a stunningly proportioned, profound wine that should drink beautifully for 5-7 years, if you can resist it that long. Mark Aubert is on the move, leaving Colgin Winery in favor of working for the Bryant Family Vineyard, while at the same time producing some of the world's greatest Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. He seems to have a plate filled with both potential and stress. The bad news is that one of his suppliers decided his Chardonnays were just too profound for the Quarry Vineyard, and will no longer sell him fruit from that source, and in 2006, there was so little Reuling available, that cuvee was not made either. In short, there are two fewer Chardonnays for the 2006 vintage! Nevertheless, those who got on the mailing list and secured some of his 2005 Chardonnays have some of the finest Chardonnays ever made in California at their beck and call. Of course, these are made from old Wente clones of Chardonnay, given full malolactic, aged on their lees, and bottled with no clarification. In only a handful of years, Mark Aubert, who received impeccable training at Peter Michael winery, working under Helen Turley, as well as at Colgin and Bryant Family Vineyards, has produced mind-boggling wines under his own label. With the addition of the Hyde Vineyard cuvee, he now produces four Chardonnays as well as two Pinot Noirs. Additional selections should begin to emerge as Aubert is moving away from any consulting business to concentrate on his own winery. His 2008s are candidates for the wines of the vintage, no doubt because of the extraordinarily low yields (his smallest crop to date). This has given the wines an extra level of concentration, which is saying something given the levels of richness achieved in previous vintages. The 2007 Chardonnays confirm the greatness I predicted for them from barrel in 2008. While this was a small crop for Aubert, it was not nearly as tiny as 2008.
