It is extremely rare for a wine to be aged this long without resulting in over-oaked wine, but they have managed to do just that. DEEP TIME comes from all his vineyard sites - Ark, Kayli Morgan and Few \u0026amp; Far Between. His debut vintage, 2000, was not an easy year to launch a high end, luxury Cabernet Sauvignon, but it was so delicious upon release, that I couldn’t believe it would get much better. After having a taste of it in late October, I’m happy to say I was wrong. At nine years of age, the 2000 is doing great. All of these wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignons, and all are aged in 100% new French oak in various sizes, from small barrels to 500-liter puncheons, and 600-liter demi-muids. The flagship wine is from the home vineyard known as Kayli Morgan (just east of St. Helena). Woodbridge also has a 15-acre parcel on Howell Mountain, the Ark Vineyard, a new offering called Few and Far Between near the Eisele Vineyard southeast of Calistoga. Lastly, there is a limited cuvee called Deep Time where he is experimenting with small lots aged 36-50 months in oak. Woodbridge is irrefutably a contrarian, but he is the kind of person you want going against mainstream, conventional thoughts. His wines are among the most individualistic in California. Sweet blueberry and black raspberry fruit interwoven with hints of wet gravel, burning embers and charcoal lead to a full-bodied, stunningly deep, velvety textured wine with a voluptuous texture, deep fruit and a broad, multilayered mouthfeel and finish. This sensational, complex 2001 appears to be fully mature and I suspect it will last another two decades. An experimental cuvee only 100 cases will be sold via the mailing list is the 2001 Deep Time. Enjoying a much longer upbringing in barrel 36 months this wine seems to have more concentration than the regular cuvee but no more toasty oak. This is one of the advantages of long oak aging if you have the raw materials to begin with. Certainly Jason Woodbridge working with his renowned consultant Philippe Melka has done something special with this special cuvee. It is more structured and tannic and not as accessible as the regular bottling. It was the best tasting I have had of that wine. These wines have a more chocolate, espresso roast character as well as tons of fruit, and a natural, concentrated character. They are very thick and rich, yet the oak seems less noticeable than it does in wines scheduled for earlier bottling. Altogether, this is a remarkable winery with a highly personalized vision that is producing extraordinary wines, and we’re all the better for it. Jayson Woodbridge, the owner of Hundred Acre winery. Woodbridge has been running in high gear since his debut 2000. His 100% Cabernet Sauvignons are made primarily by him, with some consulting advice from Philippe Melka. His first effort was from his home vineyard, Kayli Morgan, which is situated east of St. Helena. That offering was followed by a Cabernet from the 15 acre Ark Vineyard on Howell Mountain. Woodbridge recently purchased a tiny, well-situated hillside parcel above the Eisele Vineyard, southeast of Calistoga. His special projects include the Cabernet Sauvignon Precious, a wine harvested grape by grape rather than bunch by bunch, and his Cabernet Sauvignon Deep Time, which sees extended oak aging (36-42 months). His debut vintage, 2000, was not an easy year to launch a high end, luxury Cabernet Sauvignon, but it was so delicious upon release, that I couldn’t believe it would get much better. After having a taste of it in late October, I’m happy to say I was wrong. At nine years of age, the 2000 is doing great. All of these wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignons, and all are aged in 100% new French oak in various sizes, from small barrels to 500-liter puncheons, and 600-liter demi-muids.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe flagship wine is from the home vineyard known as Kayli Morgan (just east of St. Helena). Lastly, there is a limited cuvee called Deep Time where he is experimenting with small lots aged 36-50 months in oak. Woodbridge is irrefutably a contrarian, but he is the kind of person you want going against mainstream, conventional thoughts. His wines are among the most individualistic in California.
