The winery is best known for production of concentrated red wines from the Napa Valley.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eRobert Foley Wines owns an estate vineyard on Howell Mountain planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Foley sources grapes from a number of growers in the Napa Valley, focusing on fruit from hillside locations with well-draining soils. The wine portfolio is largely made up of big, rich reds and some less common varietal wines from the area including Petite Sirah and Charbono—the estate is the largest producer of the variety in the world.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eAn extensive cave system was built at Foley's winemaking facilities in 2008 and houses more than 1500 barrels for wine aging. Sadly most of the 1998 which I reviewed in issue #141 was destroyed in a warehouse fire. The only bottles that survived were those from his personal cellar and a handful of bottles provided as samples to distributors. The opaque purple-colored 1999 is a seamless classic offering a sweet perfume of coffee mocha graphite black cherries licorice and cassis. The wine reveals sweet tannin beautiful purity and a gorgeous layered texture. It should drink well for 15+ years.
