Performing even better from bottle than it did from barrel it is a strong candidate for the top wine of the vintage. Already accessible this beauty should age effortlessly for 15-20 years. Bond's new baby Pluribus is primarily all Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard planted high on Spring Mountain at a 900 foot elevation . As one might expect the 2003 Pluribus exhibits an inky/blue/purple color in addition to a beautiful bouquet of blueberries violets and crushed rocks. Pure rich and streamlined with blue and black fruit flavors that linger on the palate this distinctive red should drink well for 15 or more years. The classic structured 2003 Melbury offers beautiful blueberry blackberry and cassis notes interwoven with notions of spring flowers and espresso. This pure full-bodied opulent silky 2003 should age for 10-15 years. The most tannic broodingly backward and muscular of the single vineyard cuvees is the dense ruby/purple-colored 2003 Vecina Proprietary Red. This vineyard is situated close to the Harlan Estate site and the Vecina exhibits some of that scorched earth component in its backward personality. The tannins are slightly more rustic in this concentrated effort. It comes across like a hypothetical blend of top northern Medoc and Graves wines. This is the newest brainchild of the irrepressible Bill Harlan and his sensational winemaking team of Bob Levy and Michel Rolland. These are all 100% terroir-based Cabernet Sauvignons from distinctive sites in Napa Valley. There are 600-700 cases of each cuvee. The Melbury represents a hillside vineyard site above Lake Hennessy the St. Eden is a valley floor vineyard in the Oakville corridor and Vecina is a western hillside vineyard adjacent to Harlan Estate. I also tasted a stunning wine from Spring Mountain which may be the next site that Bill Harlan offers to Bond's mailing list clients. The quality of these singular extraordinary offerings is world-class. With a remarkably perfumed nose of crushed rocks, subtle barbecue smoke, and again, cedar wood intermixed with creme de cassis and blackberry, this wine displays a phenomenally concentrated mouthfeel, full-bodied opulence, voluptuous texture, and of this trio, is certainly the closest to its apogee of full maturity. Nevertheless, it will still benefit from another 5-10 years of cellaring and keep for an additional 25-30. Straightforward floral black currant licorice and tar aromas jump from the glass of the 2001 St. Eden. A Pauillac-like personality filled with creme de cassis cedar pen ink and lead pencil is found in this nearly perfect 2001. Utterly perfect, another wine that seems to have taken on a first-growth Pauillac-like character (think Mouton-Rothschild) is the 2001 St. Eden. As long-time readers know, this is the brainchild of Harlan Estate’s Bill Harlan, who has signed the owners of these well-placed vineyards in selected micro-climates in Napa Valley to long (quarter of a century) contracts. I had given the 2001 a perfect score, but the 2002 (made by the brain trust of on-site winemaker Bob Levy and outside French consultant Michel Rolland) is showing incredible elements of cedarwood, licorice, chocolate and creme de cassis as well as exquisite texture, full-bodied intensity, and unbelievable purity and length. It is only the second vintage for this vineyard, leased by Bill Harlan for several decades, and it has turned out to be a killer Cabernet Sauvignon and a great classic of Napa. It should drink well for 20-25 years. In the first decade, he has expanded the number of vineyard holdings to five separate wines in 2011, all made by the Harlan Estate winemaking team of Bob Levy and consulting oenologist Michel Rolland. There were only three cuvees in 2001 – from an 11-acre site on the western Oakville hillsides near Harlan Estate, the Vecina, St. Eden, an 11-acre stony knoll north of the Oakville Crossroad with a northern exposure, and from the steep slopes just north of Lake Hennessy with an eastern and southeastern exposure, east of Rutherford, the Melbury.

Since these fabulous 2001s were made, two other great vineyards have been added to the Bond portfolio. It possesses the bluer, blacker fruits that seem to come from this area of Pritchard Hill in addition to extraordinary notes of charcoal, acacia flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. This seamlessly constructed 2005 is a sensational effort that is displaying even greater potential than I saw last year. It will drink beautifully for three decades. This is a special project of Harlan Estate's owner, Bill Harlan, that is handled by the same winemaking team as Harlan Estate's, the inimitable Bob Levy assisted by the well-traveled, brilliant oenologist, Michel Rolland. They have 20-year leases on what they believe are some of the finest vineyard terroirs in Napa, from which they produce between 600-700+ cases of these single vineyard offerings from distinctive micro-climates. Anything produced that is not up to world-class quality is culled out and bottled under the name Matriarch. These wines see essentially the same upbringing as the Harlan Estate. They are bottled after at least 22 months of aging in 100% new French oak, and see virtually no fining or filtration. While each offering is completely different from its siblings, they all compete very favorably with Harlan Estate. The newest offering in the Bond portfolio, Quella, comes from a 10-acre vineyard in Spring Valley (located just off Howell Mountain Road) planted on the volcanic white ash called tufa, which contains plenty of cobblestones. The other cuvees include St. Eden (a valley floor vineyard in Oakville), Melbury (on Pritchard Hill overlooking Lake Hennessey), Vecina (a west-facing hillside site near Harlan Estate), and E Pluribus (a Spring Mountain vineyard west of the charming town of St. Helena). The lots culled out from the single vineyard wines are blended together to produce the Matriarch. This is not simply a second wine as nearly one-third of Bond's (and Harlan Estate's) production is sold off in bulk, which means the Matriarch is a serious effort on its own merits.

Wine Spectator

Burghound

Varietal

Cabernet Sauvignon

Vintage

2005

Rating

96 RP

Bottle Size

750 ml

Bottle Quantity

1

Country

USA

Region

California

Location

North Coast

Producer

Bond (Harlan)

Color

Red

Wine Type

Table

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0353/9864/7939/files/2005-bond-st-eden-cabernet-750ml-813.webp?v=1770256879
2012-bond-st-eden-cabernet
2012 Bond St Eden Cabernet - 750ml

2012 Bond St. Eden Cabernet - 98 pts!

BOND: A portfolio of wines that are diverse in their geographic representation and 'Grand Cru' in quality, all under the umbrella of one philosophy, one team, one mark.

This is the brainchild of Harlan Estate’s Bill Harlan, who has signed the owners of these well-placed vineyards in selected micro-climates in Napa Valley to long (quarter of a century) contracts. These three Bond wines, the third vintage from entrepreneur and proprietor Bill Harlan, continue to validate his visionary belief in their potential. Dense and powerful in the glass, the 2018 is done in a style that emphasizes freshness and vibrancy, reflecting a generational transition in all of these wines that is most apparent here. Dark fruit, licorice, mocha, spice and chocolate begin to emerge with time, but the St. Eden is much less forthcoming than in the past. In fact, the 2018 might very well be the most reticent St. Eden I have ever tasted. That energy will serve it well in the cellar. Readers accustomed to the voluptuous, lush St. Edens of the past will not find that in the 2018. As much as the style has changed in this wine, I am not surprised to see that. A complete vertical of the Bond wines a few years ago showed the St. Eden to have the most condensed arc of peak drinkability of the Bond wines.

Varietal

Cabernet Sauvignon

Vintage

2018

Rating

96-98 RP/ 97 AG

Bottle Size

750 ml

Bottle Quantity

1

Country

USA

Region

California

Location

North Coast

Producer

Bond (Harlan)

Color

Red

Wine Type

Table

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0353/9864/7939/files/2018-bond-st-eden-cabernet-750ml-448.webp?v=1770284468
2019-bond-st-eden-cabernet-750ml
2019 Bond St. Eden Cabernet - 750ml

2019 Bond St Eden Cabernet - 98 pts!

Dark fruit, gravel, mocha and dried herbs build into the long, substantial finish.

Varietal

Cabernet Sauvignon

Vintage

2019

Rating

98 RP/96+ AG

Bottle Size

750 ml

Bottle Quantity

1

Country

USA

Region

California

Location

North Coast

Producer

Bond (Harlan)

Color

Red

Wine Type

Table

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0353/9864/7939/files/2019-bond-st-eden-cabernet-750ml-531.webp?v=1770284531
