In the first decade, he has expanded the number of vineyard holdings to five separate wines in 2011, all made by the Harlan Estate winemaking team of Bob Levy and consulting oenologist Michel Rolland. There were only three cuvees in 2001 – from an 11-acre site on the western Oakville hillsides near Harlan Estate, the Vecina, St. Eden, an 11-acre stony knoll north of the Oakville Crossroad with a northern exposure, and from the steep slopes just north of Lake Hennessy with an eastern and southeastern exposure, east of Rutherford, the Melbury.

Since these fabulous 2001s were made, two other great vineyards have been added to the Bond portfolio. These are Quella, which is a 9 acre vineyard in the eastern hills of northern Napa Valley, planted on white volcanic ash called Tufa, and Pluribus, which is a high elevation vineyard planted on steep slopes of Spring Mountain with a northern and easterly exposure. All three 2001s showed phenomenally, and are still very young wines, with at least 15 to 20 more years of upside potential. Performing even better from bottle than it did from barrel it is a strong candidate for the top wine of the vintage. Already accessible this beauty should age effortlessly for 15-20 years. Bond's new baby Pluribus is primarily all Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard planted high on Spring Mountain at a 900 foot elevation . As one might expect the 2003 Pluribus exhibits an inky/blue/purple color in addition to a beautiful bouquet of blueberries violets and crushed rocks. Pure rich and streamlined with blue and black fruit flavors that linger on the palate this distinctive red should drink well for 15 or more years. The classic structured 2003 Melbury offers beautiful blueberry blackberry and cassis notes interwoven with notions of spring flowers and espresso. This pure full-bodied opulent silky 2003 should age for 10-15 years. The most tannic broodingly backward and muscular of the single vineyard cuvees is the dense ruby/purple-colored 2003 Vecina Proprietary Red. This vineyard is situated close to the Harlan Estate site and the Vecina exhibits some of that scorched earth component in its backward personality. The tannins are slightly more rustic in this concentrated effort. It comes across like a hypothetical blend of top northern Medoc and Graves wines. This is the newest brainchild of the irrepressible Bill Harlan and his sensational winemaking team of Bob Levy and Michel Rolland. These are all 100% terroir-based Cabernet Sauvignons from distinctive sites in Napa Valley. There are 600-700 cases of each cuvee. The Melbury represents a hillside vineyard site above Lake Hennessy the St. Eden is a valley floor vineyard in the Oakville corridor and Vecina is a western hillside vineyard adjacent to Harlan Estate. More difficult to evaluate than its siblings, the 2003 Vecina, which comes from a site near Harlan Estate, is a firm, tannic, backward wine displaying a gravelly, scorched earth, hot rock, black currant, licorice, and herb-scented bouquet. In the mouth, it is tight, rich, and ruggedly constructed with medium to full body as well as a boatload of tannin. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring, and consume it over the following 15. Don't touch this beauty for at least five years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. The saturated purple-colored 2001 Vecina offers a big sweet bouquet of creosote intermingled with cigar smoke black currant liqueur and notions of white chocolate. A massive effort with tremendous flavor intensity impressive purity and a blockbuster tannic finish this enormous red requires 5-8 years to shed some tannin. It has that uncanny Harlanesque complexity meaning first-growth Bordeaux complexity combined with Napa ripeness and power as well as a finish that lasts nearly one full minute. With a remarkably perfumed nose of crushed rocks, subtle barbecue smoke, and again, cedar wood intermixed with creme de cassis and blackberry, this wine displays a phenomenally concentrated mouthfeel, full-bodied opulence, voluptuous texture, and of this trio, is certainly the closest to its apogee of full maturity.

The most tannic as well as most concentrated and layered of the 2007s, this is a long-term, but utterly brilliant wine. In many ways it reminds me of the Harlan Estate itself given its prodigious build and potential for extended longevity. It merits 4-5 years of bottle age and should drink well for three decades thereafter. Bond is the extraordinary project of Harlan Estate's proprietor, Bill Harlan. In essence, what he does along with his winemaker, Bob Levy, and his team, is to identify outstanding vineyard sites in specific viticultural regions of Napa Valley, sign the owners to long-term (20 years) leases, and produce essentially 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines from these sites. As I have written in the past, all of these offerings represent world-class Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa meant to endure 30 or more years of cellaring should one have the patience to wait that long. There are five separate vineyard sites in the Bond portfolio. Melbury comes off steep slopes just north of Lake Hennessy, east of Rutherford. It is a 7-acre hillside vineyard planted in compressed clay and sedimentary soils. The Pluribus (which I have mistakenly referred to as E Pluribus in past reviews) comes from a high elevation (over 1,000 feet) site on Spring Mountain on the west side of Napa Valley. The northern-most parcel in the Bond portfolio, it is a 7-acre vineyard planted in pure tufa volcanic bedrock. The most southernly situated vineyard is Vecina, which is the nearby neighbor of Harlan Estate. These are western hillsides of Napa Valley overlooking the Oakville Corridor to the north and Yountville to the south. It is an 11-acre parcel planted at an elevation of 200-330 feet. St. Eden is the only valley floor vineyard. It is composed of 11 acres just north of the Oakville Crossroad planted in gentle foothills. The Quella vineyard is a 9 acre site in the eastern foothills of St. Helena planted on an old alluvial riverbed of cobble and rocks intermixed with the white tufa soils of volcanic origin. All the 2007s have been bottled after receiving essentially the same time in barrel, usually in excess of two years (the same as the Harlan Estate cuvee). The 2008s were all tasted from barrel. The 2005 Vecina is also strutting its stuff. I can't say it showed better than it did last year, but this wine comes close to perfection for my palate. Made in a Graves-like style, it exhibits scents of roasted herbs, espresso, scorched rocks, and liquid minerals seamlessly integrated into a full-bodied, dense wine offering a cascade of black cherries and black currants. Built for the long haul, this powerful 2005 is soft enough to be drunk early, but it will not hit its stride for at least a decade, and should age for three decades thereafter. This is a special project of Harlan Estate's owner, Bill Harlan, that is handled by the same winemaking team as Harlan Estate’s, the inimitable Bob Levy assisted by the well-traveled, brilliant oenologist, Michel Rolland. They have 20-year leases on what they believe are some of the finest vineyard terroirs in Napa, from which they produce between 600-700+ cases of these single vineyard offerings from distinctive micro-climates. Anything produced that is not up to world-class quality is culled out and bottled under the name Matriarch. These wines see essentially the same upbringing as the Harlan Estate. They are bottled after at least 22 months of aging in 100% new French oak, and see virtually no fining or filtration. While each offering is completely different from its siblings, they all compete very favorably with Harlan Estate. The newest offering in the Bond portfolio, Quella, comes from a 10-acre vineyard in Spring Valley (located just off Howell Mountain Road) planted on the volcanic white ash called tufa, which contains plenty of cobblestones. The other cuvees include St. Eden (a valley floor vineyard in Oakville), Melbury (on Pritchard Hill overlooking Lake Hennessey), Vecina (a west-facing hillside site near Harlan Estate), and E Pluribus (a Spring Mountain vineyard west of the charming town of St. Helena). The lots culled out from the single vineyard wines are blended together to produce the Matriarch. This is not simply a second wine as nearly one-third of Bond's (and Harlan Estate's) production is sold off in bulk, which means the Matriarch is a serious effort on its own merits.

As a reminder, Vecina is sourced from Vine Hill Ranch, at the southern end of Oakville, where the Cabernets are distinguished by a beguiling combination of power and savory/earthy intensity.

Varietal

Cabernet Sauvignon

Vintage

2018

Rating

96-98 RP/ 99 AG

Bottle Size

750 ml

Bottle Quantity

1

Country

USA

Region

California

Location

North Coast

Producer

Bond (Harlan)

Color

Red

Wine Type

Table

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0353/9864/7939/files/2018-bond-vecina-cabernet-750ml-654.webp?v=1770284476
2019-bond-vecina-cabernet-750ml
2019 Bond Vecina Cabernet - 750ml

2019 Bond Vecina Cabernet - 99 pts!

BOND: A portfolio of wines that are diverse in their geographic representation and 'Grand Cru' in quality, all under the umbrella of one philosophy, one team, one mark.

This is the brainchild of Harlan Estate’s Bill Harlan, who has signed the owners of these well-placed vineyards in selected micro-climates in Napa Valley to long (quarter of a century) contracts.

In fact, in a cold cellar these wines probably have 40 or more years of aging potential, but few of us will be able to wait that long to see how they taste.

Varietal

Cabernet Sauvignon

Vintage

2019

Rating

99 RP/ 98 AG

Bottle Size

750 ml

Bottle Quantity

1

Country

USA

Region

California

Location

North Coast

Producer

Bond (Harlan)

Color

Red

Wine Type

Table

Robert Parker

99 RP - My pick of the 2019s from Bond is the 2019 Vecina, which originates from a terraced, east-facing vineyard near the Bond winery, in the western hills of Oakville.
