A legend of the future is the 2003 Ermitage Le Pavillon 659 cases. The equal of such stupendous examples as 1990 and 1989 the 2003 is incredibly rich as well as awesomely well-delineated and fresh. An inky/blue/purple color is followed by a subtle but impressively intense nose of barbecue smoke creme de cassis blueberries blackberries and white flowers. The wine cascades over the palate 15.8% natural alcohol with extraordinary richness intensity and silkiness. This seamlessly constructed Hermitage is analytically high in tannin but extremely low in acidity with a freaky accessibility a vintage character. Prodigiously concentrated and high in extract it should last for a half century or longer. It will be fascinating to follow over the next several decades. The 1990 Le Pavilion is as compelling as the 1989. It exhibits slightly less opulence, but more power and weight. Black colored, with an extraordinary perfume of licorice, sweet blackcurrants, smoke, and minerals, it coats the palate with layer upon layer of decadently rich, superconcentrated, nearly viscous Syrah flavors. There is amazing glycerin, a chewy, unctuous texture, and phenomenal length. The tannins, which are considerable when analyzed, are virtually obscured by the massive quantities of fruit. I hope I live to see the day when Chapoutier's 1990 Ermitage Le Pavilion, Chave's 1990 Hermitage, and Jaboulet's 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle are fully mature! What a trio of wines these three producers have produced from this historic appellation! My best guess for the aging potential of the Ermitage Le Pavilion is that it is more forward than both the Chave and Jaboulet Hermitages, but should you have the good fortune to find a bottle or two, do not open it for at least 7-10 years. It should last for 30-40 years.

Wine Spectator

Burghound

Varietal

Syrah

Vintage

1990

Rating

100 RP

Bottle Size

750 ml

Bottle Quantity

1

Country

France

Region

Rhone

Location

Northern Rhone

Producer

Chapoutier

Color

Red

Wine Type

Table

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0353/9864/7939/files/1990-chapoutier-ermitage-le-pavillon-100-pts-750ml-wine-805.webp?v=1770243805
1995-chapoutier-ermitage-le-pavillon-99-pts
1995 Chapoutier Ermitage le Pavillon - 99 pts - 750ml

1995 Chapoutier Ermitage le Pavillon - 99 pts

The family's history in the Rhône dates back to 1808, but it wasn't until 1879 that Polydor Chapoutier transitioned the family from growing grapes to making and trading wine. The wine is more accessible than the 1996 (due to lower acidity and more immediately accessible glycerin and fruit), with a magnificent black/purple color, and layers of cassis fruit, smoky, roasted meat, and mineral characteristics that are the result of barrel fermentation and high extraction of fruit. It is huge, but not heavy, gorgeously proportioned, and dazzlingly well-defined. A monster Hermitage of immense proportions, it somehow manages to keep everything in balance. This backward Pavillon will require 10-12 years of cellaring. It should age well through the first half of the next century.
