I have had a difficult time keeping the corks in my bottles of 1994 Dominus. Eight-thousand cases were produced from a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 14% Cabernet Franc 12% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. In this vintage 174 days passed between bud break and the harvest a remarkable period of time for any wine region in the world. The 1994 is a strikingly thick compellingly rich wine with the texture of a great Pomerol despite being made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine exhibits a dense purple color and an incredibly fragrant nose of jammy black fruits spice smoke and loamy truffle-like scents. In the mouth it is full-bodied with thrilling levels of extract and richness but no sense of heaviness or harshness. This seamless Dominus possesses no hard edges as its acidity tannin and alcohol are beautifully meshed with copious quantities of ripe fruit. This wine offers early drinking yet has the potential to last for 30+ years. Full-bodied and low in acidity it possesses exceptional concentration and purity. Qualitatively it is built along the lines of the 1992 and 1990. While it is not as powerful or intense as the 1996 or 1994 the 1995 is a large-scaled rich concentrated wine that should provide splendid drinking for two decades. With 14.1% alcohol and a pH that would make many New World oenologists shudder (about 3.95), this wine is a fleshy, silky-textured, opulent wine with a gorgeous nose of roasted herbs, coffee, jammy black cherry and plum-like fruit. Asian spice, licorice, and blackberry and cherry notes with tobacco spice all add to this complex, very involved, yet gorgeously symmetrical Dominus. The wine is medium to full-bodied, very concentrated, and silky-textured. I do not know how he does it but Christian Moueix is able to make Cabernet Sauvignon from the southern Napa Valley taste like a terrific Pomerol. The 1997 possesses considerable quantities of glycerin terrific fruit purity and gobs of black cherry and cassis flavors intermixed with licorice coffee and Asian spice notes. It is a stunning Dominus that will be drinkable when released and will age well for 15-20 years. I have had a difficult time keeping the corks in my bottles of 1994 Dominus. Eight-thousand cases were produced from a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 14% Cabernet Franc 12% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. In this vintage 174 days passed between bud break and the harvest a remarkable period of time for any wine region in the world. The 1994 is a strikingly thick compellingly rich wine with the texture of a great Pomerol despite being made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine exhibits a dense purple color and an incredibly fragrant nose of jammy black fruits spice smoke and loamy truffle-like scents. In the mouth it is full-bodied with thrilling levels of extract and richness but no sense of heaviness or harshness. This seamless Dominus possesses no hard edges as its acidity tannin and alcohol are beautifully meshed with copious quantities of ripe fruit. This wine offers early drinking yet has the potential to last for 30+ years. I do not know how he does it but Christian Moueix is able to make Cabernet Sauvignon from the southern Napa Valley taste like a terrific Pomerol. The 1997 possesses considerable quantities of glycerin terrific fruit purity and gobs of black cherry and cassis flavors intermixed with licorice coffee and Asian spice notes. It is a stunning Dominus that will be drinkable when released and will age well for 15-20 years. It is ironic that Christian Moueix, the great Merlot specialist at his flagship chateaux in Pomerol, especially Petrus, prefers the other Bordeaux varietals at his Napa property. Interestingly, when I visit Dominus, they always open a fresh bottle and serve it alongside a bottle that has been decanted for 24 hours. The alcohol, by California standards, is a relatively modest 14.1%. Blending the best of French savoir faire with the brilliant fruit purity and ripeness of Napa Valley, Moueix has turned in another tour de force that seems far superior today than it did when it was first released. This is one of the vintage's greatest wines. Dense purple and youthful, with a glorious nose of earth, blackcurrants, sweet black cherries and incense, the oak is pushed way in the background, as it is in all of the Moueix wines, and the result is a wine of terroir, of great originality and authenticity. This full-bodied classic from Dominus can be drunk now, but really won't hit its prime for another 4-5 years and last at least another two decades or more. The 2005 Dominus continues to strut its stuff, tasting like a Napa hybrid blend of a St.-Emilion and Pomerol. Its dark ruby\/purple-tinged color is followed by notions of cedarwood, spice box, roasted herbs, sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, licorice, and truffles. Full-bodied with excellent fruit intensity, complex aromatics, supple tannins, and a long finish, this 7,000-case blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot should drink well for two decades or more. Christian Moueix, Dominus owner, has purchased the 35-acre Swanson Vineyard, which is situated between the well-known California bistros, Brix and Mustard's. I suspect that will result in a third label from Dominus. At present, the production from these large holdings in Yountville is approximately 10,000-12,000 cases, with the second wine, Napanook, representing 3,500-4,000 cases, depending on the vintage. It is ironic that Christian Moueix, the great Merlot specialist at his flagship chateaux in Pomerol, especially Petrus, prefers the other Bordeaux varietals at his Napa property. Interestingly, when I visit Dominus, they always open a fresh bottle and serve it alongside a bottle that has been decanted for 24 hours. On each occasion, the more complex, open wine is the one that has had 24 hours of aeration, something buyers of this wine should take into consideration. These are the two strongest back to back vintages for Dominus since 1990-1991 and 2001-2002. Although different, the 1991 Dominus possesses extraordinary intensity, remarkable opulence, and amazing fruit extraction, all welded to a full-bodied structure. The wine's sensational purity and inner-core of depth must be tasted to be believed. The 1991 will be approachable young because of its sweet tannin, yet it exhibits the potential to last for 25 years.
