It displays beautifully perfumed blue and black fruits intermixed with some pen ink, acacia flowers, and black raspberries. Gorgeous, subtle smoke and a floral character follow through into the sweet tannins of this full-bodied, opulent wine, which builds incrementally and has a gloriously luxurious texture. There's not one trace of astringency to this seamlessly wrought wine, which is the liquid equivalent of haute couture. Already drinking well, it should continue to evolve for two decades or more. This operation has elicited considerable acclaim, given the talent involved. First of all is the terroir, a stunning location high on Pritchard Hill, a neighborhood filled with Napa superstars, such as Colgin, Bryant Family, Continuum, David Arthur, and Del Dotto. Add to that the level of talented winemaker Andy Erickson, consultant Michel Rolland, viticulturalist David Abreu and the result is essentially a think-tank of world-class quality. Yields are tiny (15 acres in vine), and the emphasis here is on putting together a blend with a high dosage of Cabernet Franc in the final assemblage. For that reason, the wines probably need slightly more time to strut their stuff. At times it shows a little more depth, power and richness than the Hexameter, but both wines are compelling. Endless layers of fruit saturate the palate as this rich, intense wine conquers the heart and intellect. A totally vivid wine, the 2009 is even more impressive from bottle than it was from barrel. Over the time I followed it, the 2009 gained finesse and elegance in the glass, which bodes quite well for the future. Intense graphite, crushed rocks and pencil shaving nuances add energy to the polished, huge finish. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. Ovid keeps raising the bar with this drop-dead gorgeous set of new releases. Owners Dana Johnson and Mark Nelson have spared no expense in their pursuit to make world-class wines. These new releases are a testament to their unwavering commitment to quality. This year I also tasted two of the \"Experiment\" series wines, which bear creative names inspired by Dana Johnson's background in Library Sciences. The talented Austin Peterson makes the wines, Andy Erickson consults and David Abreu manages the vineyards, but what really counts is what is in the bottle. The results so far from this young property have been nothing less than stellar. The wine displays blueberry and blackberry fruit, some violets, a hints of charcoal embers and graphite. It is pure, full-bodied, ripe and already dramatic and ostentatious. This is a beauty to drink over the next 15 or so years. Ovid keeps raising the bar with this drop-dead gorgeous set of new releases. Owners Dana Johnson and Mark Nelson have spared no expense in their pursuit to make world-class wines. These new releases are a testament to their unwavering commitment to quality. This year I also tasted two of the 'Experiment' series wines, which bear creative names inspired by Dana Johnson's background in Library Sciences. The talented Austin Peterson makes the wines, Andy Erickson consults and David Abreu manages the vineyards, but what really counts is what is in the bottle. The results so far from this young property have been nothing less than stellar.
