This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in 100% new French oak. Although limited in availability (220 cases produced), it is a wine of awesome intensity boasting an opaque purple color in addition to a brilliant floral-scented bouquet displaying aromas of cassis, black raspberries, black fruit, and forest floor. Multilayered with terrific intensity as well as a long, nearly 60-second finish, this flawlessly assembled wine is a brilliant example of Cabernet Sauvignon from the St. Helena hillsides. Give it 2-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 25 years. Bravo! One can't say enough about what proprietor Hi Sang Lee and his son, both from Seoul, Korea, have accomplished at what used to be called the Livingston-Moffett Estate in Rutherford. They have dramatically transformed that estate into their Helms Vineyard, to which they have added the Lotus Vineyard from the St. Helena hillsides and the Hershey Vineyard on Howell Mountain. The consulting winemaker is Philippe Melka, and as the following notes attest, their 2007s are off the charts. Layers of dark red fruit, kirsch, sweet spices, tobacco and herbs saturate the palate as this large-scaled, voluptuous wine opens up in the glass. There is a purity and centeredness to the 2009 that is striking. At the same time, the tannins aren't quite as polished as they are in the very best wines here. Overall, though, that is a pretty small critique for a wine that delivers so much pure pleasure. Exotic spice and kirsch notes reappear on the finish. The 2009 was fermented in a combination of 45% oak uprights, 45% cement and 10% barriques. It spent 26 months in 100% new French oak barrels. It's hard to know where to start with these magnificent wines from Dana Estates. The 2010s are epic, while the 2011s continue to show all the promise I sensed when I first tasted the wines this spring. The 2010s were brought in between October 6-20, while the 2011 harvest didn't even start until October 22, only to finish on November 3! Napa Valley has attracted a lot of wealthy, big-time investors over the years, but few, if any, have managed to accomplish as much as Hi Sang Lee and his team have in such a short period of time. White truffle, mint, bitter chocolate and cloves melt into a rich, layered core of blue and black fruit. Hints of tar, smoke, mocha and grilled herbs develop later, adding further complexity and nuance. Layers of fruit continue to build to a head-spinning crescendo of aromas and flavors. I can't say enough about the job the entire team at Dana Estates has done with this utterly magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon. The Lotus was fermented in a combination of 45% oak uprights, 45% cement and 10% barrique. It spent 26 months in 100% new French oak barrels. One can't say enough about what proprietor Hi Sang Lee and his son, both from Seoul, Korea, have accomplished at what used to be called the Livingston-Moffett Estate in Rutherford. They have dramatically transformed that estate into their Helms Vineyard, to which they have added the Lotus Vineyard from the St. Helena hillsides and the Hershey Vineyard on Howell Mountain. The consulting winemaker is Philippe Melka, and as the following notes attest, their 2007s are off the charts. The essence of Howell Mountain comes through loud and clear in this stunning, utterly breathtaking wine. A large-scaled, structured Cabernet Sauvignon, the Hershey is going to require considerable patience. Exotic balsamic and spice notes continue to develop in the glass, giving the wine additional volume, depth and textural richness. There is little doubt the Hershey is one of the great wines of this magnificent vintage. The Hershey was fermented in barrel and spent 26 months in French oak, 100% new. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. It’s hard to know where to start with these magnificent wines from Dana Estates. The 2010s are epic, while the 2011s continue to show all the promise I sensed when I first tasted the wines this spring. The 2010s were brought in between October 6-20, while the 2011 harvest didn’t even start until October 22, only to finish on November 3! Napa Valley has attracted a lot of wealthy, big-time investors over the years, but few, if any, have managed to accomplish as much as Hi Sang Lee and his team have in such a short period of time. Those who think Napa Valley only makes big blockbusters are advised to check out this beauty of finesse, elegance and mid-weight. It should drink nicely for 10-15+ years. Proprietor Hi Sang Lee has resurrected this once historic estate in Rutherford where the winery was first constructed in 1883 by H. W. Helms. There are four cuvees as of 2010, the Crystal Springs Vineyard on Howell Mountain, the Helms Vineyard in Rutherford, the Hershey Vineyard on Howell Mountain and the Lotus Vineyard in Napa Valley. They also produce a wine called Onda, which is meant to be a more forward styled, lower priced effort. Its opaque purple color, which is common among the 2012 and 2013 Bordeaux varietals in Napa, leads to a spectacularly flamboyant and aromatic nose of earth, graphite, blackberry and cassis. The wine is rich, full-bodied, and again, concentrated, pure and dense, with sweet melted tannins nicely integrated, along with the French oak (about 100% new). Deep garnet-purple colored, it sashays out of the glass with bold, flamboyant scents of chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and warm cassis with hints of menthol, lilacs, clove oil and crushed rocks plus a waft of iron ore.
