It is crammed with fruit with a fat opulent texture reminiscent of the 1985. The finish is rich authoritative and long. The tannins are firm but appear less noticeable and softer than those of the Romanee St.-Vivant. The DRC 1990s all of which were bottled in April\/May are among the deepest colored wines from this domaine that I have tasted in the last decade. Moreover they are firmly structured with significant tannins from both the vintage and from the aging in 100% new oak barrels. For the fortunate few who have had the discretionary income to afford the other great vintages of the DRC from the eighties 1980 1983 1985 1988 and 1989 the question is - are the 1990s superior? I am not sure they are any better than the 1980s 1985 and 1988s but they undoubtedly represent a classic concentrated long-lived style of wine. Moreover all of these wines should have a more graceful evolution and broader window of drinkability than the tannic 1988s as well as potentially greater longevity than the succulent and opulent 1985s. All of these offerings are outstanding with that tell-tale complex exotic fragrance that the DRC routinely achieves. NOTE: Prices had not been released (the wines will arrive in early 1993). I have inserted the same prices asked for the 1989 vintage as an approximation of what these wines will fetch. RP High-toned fruit with fresh bright blackberry fruit aromas and the barest trace of secondary character to the tight very ripe beautifully complex flavors. There is still quite a bit of tannin still to resolve though this has excellent density of extract and solid balance. Rich long and impressive if not especially detailed. Another recent bottle tasted in Burgundy was fresher than the one at the big Richebourg retrospective held in '01. A very impressive effort that will live for decades. Consistent notes. At age 11 the '99 Richebourg is clearly signaling that it's going to require 20 to 25 years to really be at its peak. At the same time, there is sufficient mid-palate sap to at least make it approachable sooner, perhaps in 7 to 10 years from now. One of the great vintages for this fabled wine. Many, and consistent, notes. BH Magnificent the 1999 Richebourg has a saturated dark ruby color. It explodes from the glass with loads of super-ripe dark fruits including blackberries cassis plums and black cherries. This dense plush and broad wine has prodigious depth to its roasted red and black fruit-flavored personality. A myriad of spices can be found in its chewy-textured full-bodied highly concentrated powerful character. Its extraordinarily long finish is dominated by fruit yet copious quantities of sweet and supple tannin can be discerned. The flavors are opulent and sumptuously proportioned with massive amounts of sap and dry extract that completely stains and coats the palate before exploding on the hugely long finish. Yes, this is a big, indeed enormous wine but one that never loses its sense of balance and the velvety backend largely buffers the very firm tannins. A great Richebourg of colossal quality that may indeed rival the awesome '62. BH Violets, roses, raspberries, and red cherries emanate from the 2003 Richebourg. Full-bodied, deep, and hugely concentrated, it is muscular, firm and displays the firmest structure of the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti’s 2003s. Soy sauce, tar, chocolate, and dark fruits are found in its focused, audacious personality. Its impressively persistent finish is studded with highly present tannin. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-Romanée, the Domaine makes wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the Côte d'Or. The vineyard has a long history, dating back to the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in the 13th Century. It took on the Romanée name in 1631, and the Conti in 1760. In 1869, it was obtained by Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, who left it to his great grandchildren upon his death. This is a really interesting wine because it's a wine of contrasts yet it works because there is a gorgeous combination of finesse and power and again, I really like the sense of drive and energy here as well as the first rate balance. Just as it was last year, this is also very shut down at present though vigorous swirling coaxes superbly elegant and pure aromas that are wonderfully broad and include red, black, blue and violet aromas as well as seemingly a full cupboard of Asian spices that complement to perfection the extremely rich, full and sweet flavors that are quite floral in the mouth, all wrapped in a detailed and punchy finish where the tannic spine is completely buried. While it sounds moderately odd to describe it this way, there is a swagger to the '05 Riche and this will clearly be one very long distance runner. The other aspect that is notable is how intensely mineral-driven the '05 Riche is and interestingly, this seems almost delicate next to the opulence of the RSV. Indeed it's as though the Riche and RSV have exchanged personalities! A (very high level) qualitative choice but believe me when I say that the underlying characters of these two wines couldn't be more different. BH The 2005 Richebourg suggests lightly cooked cherry, lilies, and vanilla-chocolate pot de creme, coming onto the palate with a gentle wave of creamy fruit, almost shockingly open-knit and youthfully generous. Low-toned richness of salted beef broth and a hint of wet stone add hints of gravitas, but despite ample (refined) tannins, there is nothing to restrain a veritable gushing of ripe, juicy, sweet finishing fruit. This might close up for a time, but these early indications suggest one ought to revisit it in 3-5 years and expect it to offer much earlier enjoyment than the Grands-Echezeaux or Romanee-St.-Vivant. The bottle that I tried displayed a hint of reduction though not enough to hide the intensely floral and notably ripe nose that features fresh notes of plum, mocha and cassis that are sprinkled with exotic spice notes. The expansive and tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors are, unusually, almost as fine as those of the RSV yet even slightly more complex with the same finely grained tannins. The length is similar but at present, the extra dimension of depth gives this the barest of edges. Either way, this chewy, robust and overly muscular effort is genuinely sensational and clearly built for the very long haul. BH The 2009 Richebourg is a dramatic wine. In 2009 there is so much fruit that the tannins are barely perceptible. With time in the glass dark notes of tar, smoke, licorice and violets develop, adding tons of complexity to the fruit. This is a huge, vertical wine that captures the essence of Richebourg in its towering fruit and structure. Layers of fruit saturate every corner of the palate as the wine builds to a deeply satisfying crescendo of head-spinning aromas and flavors. Domaine de la Romanee-Conti’s 2009s have turned out just as brilliantly as I had hoped. The wines reflect the signature qualities of the year, but never lose their essential classicism. Long-time DRC fans know the domaine bottles in six-barrel lots, which naturally introduces a level of bottle variation that is not found in most other wines. I hope the massive amount of information that has recently come to light regarding counterfeit wines and their proliferation might be the catalyst for the domaine to consider bottling their wines in one homogenous lot, as is common for the vast majority of high-quality wines throughout the world. Once the domaine’s wines mature in 20-30 years it will be impossible to tell the difference between ‘normal’ bottle variation, poorly stored bottles and very good fakes. Certainly consumers who are willing and able to pay the prices these wines fetch are at the very least deserving of a consistent product.
