Here, the 55 acre vineyard is made up of iron-rich clay and gravel soils. This kind of soil is well-suited to Merlot, which makes up the bulk of plantings, with around a fifth of the vineyard dedicated to Cabernet Franc instead.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe vines are harvested by hand and then vinified plot by plot – the vat and cellar rooms were updated in 2004 to help this process. After fermentation, the grand vin is aged in oak for 18 months before release. A spectacular wine that seems to put on weight every time I go back to it, this old-style wine (meaning reminiscent of some of the late forties vintages) has an opaque, murky plum\/purple color with only a bit of lightening at the edge. The nose offers up notes of new saddle leather intermixed with very jammy notes of blackberry liqueur, licorice, smoke, beef blood, and truffles; it is a total turn-on. Very opulent, viscous, and intense, with full body, great richness, and loads pf glycerin reminiscent of some of the estate's greatest older vintages from the forties, this wine seems set for at least another 15-20 years of evolution.
