2019 001 Vintners Ecotone Vineyard Cabernet - 1st Vintage
One of the most exciting new projects in Napa Valley! The old Thorevilos Vineyard property which has produced some of the absolute best fruit in Napa over the past 30 plus years!
The Ecotone Vineyard sits in its own little valley, above Saint Helena but below Howell Mountain. These gnarled, thirty-three-year-old vines have roots that push deep into the site’s rare, white, volcanic tufa. By late summer, the soil is “moon dust” that on even the shortest of vineyard walks, coats your jeans white up to your knees. Graeme says, “The site’s characteristic aromas of blackberry, sage, lavender and olive, in combination with the rare juxtaposition of power and finesse, make this one of my favorite vineyards in the Napa Valley.”
”Inky, fresh dark cherry evolving into layers of bitter chocolate, pencil lead, black olive and forest floor. A beautifully sculpted wine expressing purity, concentration and a sense of restraint. The 30+ year old vines add depth and concentration across the palate with a core of noble tannins unwinding into a mouthwatering finish. A nod to the classic wines of the Napa Valley.” Graeme MacDonald

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Ecotone Vineyard is the debut offering from 001 Vintners. A powerful, brooding wine, the 2019 presents an exotic mélange of dark red-toned fruit, rose petal, chocolate, spice, crushed rocks and blood orange. Time in the glass brings out a good bit of Cabernet Franc freshness, as well as the driving tannins that are so typical of this site. Winemaker Graeme MacDonald gave the 2019 41 days on the skins (with some bleeding in fermentation) and then 20 months in barrel. Ecotone is a very rugged site that tends to produce wines of notable structural intensity. I imagine it will take a few vintages to fine tune all of the elements here. The 2019 is a very fine start for this new project, even if it’s a bit of beast. |
