2009 Fourrier Griottes-Chambertin Burgundy - 96 pts!

Domaine Fourrier is a Burgundy wine estate based in Gevrey-Chambertin on the Côte d'Or. Its wines, mostly made from Pinot Noir, are highly sought-after and known for their silky finesse. Fourrier is perhaps best known for its wine from the famed Clos Saint-Jacques Premier Cru vineyard.

The domaine's vineyard holdings total 8.7 hectares (21.5 acres), located predominantly in Gevrey-Chambertin. These include parcels in seven different Gevrey-Chambertin premier cru sites, and a small plot in the Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard. Plots in Chambolle-Musigny, including two Premier Crus, Morey-Saint-Denis and the Les Petits Vougeots Premier Cru vineyard complete the portfolio. Only fruit from vines older than 30 years old are used to make Domaine Fourrier wines.

Rating 96 RP - 2009 Fourrier Griottes Chambertin Burgundy - 96 pts! The 2009 Griotte-Chambertin is a relatively delicate, ethereal wine with expressive aromatics and understated fruit. Deceptively medium in body, the Griotte needs time to flesh out a bit, but it is a stunner. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. Count me among the Burgundy fans who are thrilled Jean-Marie Fourrier chose not to pursue the career as a commercial airline pilot for which he studied. Fourrier began picking on September 17. The fruit was destemmed. Cuvaison lasted around 14 days but Fourrier commented that he had an unusually high (50%) amount of shot berries, which had the effect of extending the fermentations for another week or so. The malos started and ended early, hence Fourrier decided to bottle early as well. Per his usual practice, Fourrier left the wines on the lees with no racking until the wines were prepared for bottling. On average the wines saw 20% new oak. I tasted all of the 2009s from bottle. RP

Burghound 94 BH - This is also intensely floral as well as quite elegant with a highly attractive sense of freshness to the high-toned red berry and wet stone suffused aromas. The seductively textured, concentrated and mouth coating flavors possess a taut muscularity on the refined, intense and hugely long finish where a discreet touch of wood surfaces. This should make for a seriously fine example of the appellation in a decade or so yet thanks for the ample dry extract, it should be enjoyable young if desired.
