During the 20th Century, the estate was owned by several of the famous wine families of the region, but was bought in 2001 by the Cuvelier family, who also own Château Poujeaux.
The 18.5 hectare (45 acre) vineyard is planted mostly to Merlot (85 percent), with 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 5 percent Cabernet Franc on clay soils over limestone. The extensive cellars are underground, cut into the limestone bedrock, giving ideal conditions for maturation.

| Robert Parker | 95 RP - The 2009 Clos Fourtet is medium to deep garnet colored and opens on a medicinal/Band-Aid note, giving way to appealing baked red and black fruit notes with touches of dried herbs, tree bark, chargrill and a ferrous waft. The palate is full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins and plenty of muscular fruit, finishing earthy and just a little hard. |

| Robert Parker Rating | A strong effort from Clos Fourtet, the dark ruby/purple-colored 1998 offers pure blackberry and cherry aromas with subtle wood and licorice in the background. Medium-bodied, exceptionally pure, with low acidity as well as silky tannin, this sexy offering is ideal for drinking now and over the next 14-15 years. |

| Antonio Galloni Rating | 92 - The 1998 Clos Fourtet is a vintage that I have not encountered for many years. This has a superb bouquet: very fresh and vibrant with hints of black olive tapenade infusing the black fruit, more estuarine than other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, elegant for a '98 Right Bank. A keen line of acidity maintains tension throughout. There is just a touch of pencil lead on the finish. This is drinking beautifully and comes recommended. Tasted at the Clos Fourtet vertical in April 2023. |
