2005 Chateau Bellevue Mondotte Bordeaux Magnum - 100 pts!

Château Bellevue Mondotte is a tiny estate in the Saint-Émilion region, located just to the east of the village. It produces a single Merlot-based red wine.

The 6 acre vineyard is located at the top of the limestone plateau, where it faces south over the Dordogne valley. Most of the plantings are Merlot, with about 10 percent divided between Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bellevue Mondotte employs strict green harvesting and fruit selection, lowering yield significantly. This means that production is small, typically totalling 400 cases a year.

Château Bellevue Mondotte is aged in 100 percent new French oak barrels for 24 months. The final blend takes place just before the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

In 2001 Bellevue Mondotte was acquired by Gérard Perse, owner of the adjacent Château Pavie Decesse and the neighboring Pavie.

Rating 94 RP - The 2001 Mouton Rothschild a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc from low yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare was quite closed and nearly impenetrable when I tasted it in 2003. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color and a hint of new saddle leather intermixed with espresso black currant liqueur and Asian spices. The wine is dense on the attack but excruciatingly tannic and backward with medium to full body and a certain austerity/angularity in the finish. As I indicated last year this wine needs to flesh out for it to merit a higher score. RP

Robert Parker Rating 100 RP - Made up of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the opaque bluish/purple 2005 from Bellevue-Mondotte offers amazing chocolate espresso notes along with blueberry and blackberry liqueur, some incense and a hint of flowers. Full-bodied and staggeringly concentrated, this blockbuster wine (in a blockbuster vintage) is unreal. Talk about a wine that is beyond belief – this is a great achievement from Chantal and Gérard Perse. Drink it over the next 25-30 years. Sadly, there were only 340 or so cases produced.
