Beaulieu Vineyard is a historically significant winery in California's Rutherford AVA that has been producing wine for more than a century. During Prohibition, it managed to obtain a contract to supply sacramental wine to churches, meaning it was able to remain in production between 1920 and 1933 when the Volstead Act was repealed. This makes Beaulieu one of the longest continually operational wineries in the United States.
The company was founded in 1900 by Georges de Latour. His background was not in winemaking or vineyard management, so he hired famed enologist André Tchelistcheff to come to Rutherford to establish the estate. Tchelistcheff went on to create the prestige cuvée Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and mentored many of the next generation of Napa winemakers, including Robert Mondavi, Mike Grgich and Joe Heitz.

| Robert Parker | 95+ RP - Composed of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 100% new. It boasts an alcohol level of 15.2%. Deep garnet in color with a touch of purple, it’s a little broody today, offering glimpses at spice cake, baked raspberries, warm cassis and blueberry pie with hints of menthol, mocha, cigar box and forest floor. Big, full-bodied, firm and grainy, this is a powerful wine that is in a bit of a mute phase right now in terms of fruit expression, finishing long and earthy. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this wine exceeds my expectations in another 3-5 years. |

| Antonio Galloni Rating | 95 AG - Here in its first release, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rarity is a new flagship bottling sourced from BV's iconic #1 and #2 ranches. The blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot yields a wine of tremendous depth and concentration. Dark fruit, leather, tobacco, lavender, espresso and mocha all build in the glass. It is interesting to taste the 2013 next to the 2016, as it was done at a time in the estate's history when concentration and heavy extraction were more central to the winemaking philosophy than they are today. Give this a few years to come around. Bottled only in magnums. |
