1998 Domaine du Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve le Clos du Caillou - 99 points! The monumental 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Clos du Caillou 50% Grenache 40% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah is awesome. It is a great concentrated Chateauneuf du Pape that manages to retain its purity balance and remarkable equilibrium. The first word I wrote in my notebook was Geez! This inky purple-colored 1998 is tight and unevolved with plenty of firm tannin unreal levels of richness and a compelling finish that lasts nearly a minute. It represents the essence of this appellation being a synthesis in style between the more modern approach to winemaking with the character of a traditionally produced Provencal red. This is a prodigious Chateauneuf du Pape but patience is required. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. RP
