2003 Benjamin Romeo Contador - 99 pts!

Bodega Contador is a modern wine producer in Rioja, Spain. Its flagship wine, Contador, is one of Spain's most consistently high-priced wines, on par with Pingus and Vega Sicilia. Made predominantly from Tempranillo and aged in French oak, Contador is known for being full-bodied, fruit-driven and rich.

The bodegas was established in 1995 when Artadi winemaker Benjamin Romeo purchased a cave in Rioja, and began to buy vineyards in the area to make his wine. The first vintage of Contador, made in Romeo's parents' garage was released in 1999, and the 2004 and 2005 vintages went on to receive 100-point scores from Robert Parker, cementing the wine's in-demand status.

Rating 99 RP - The 2003 Contador (a meager 200 bottles for the American market) was sourced from three tiny parcels ranging in age from 65-80 years. It was fermented in new French barriques, aged for 12 months, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result is a spectacular wine with a remarkably expressive nose of pain grille, lead pencil, spice box, espresso, black currants, and wild blueberries that roars from the glass. The opulent palate is mouth-coating, thick, and full-flavored with the structure well-concealed by the masses of fruit. This legend in the making, while irresistible now, should evolve slowly over 2-3 decades much like a first growth Bordeaux and still be drinking at age 50. RP
