2001 Philip Togni Cabernet - 97 pts!
This small 10-acre estate situated high on Spring Mountain produces some of the most distinctive Napa Valley wines. Togni has been a long-time believer in not acidifying and his wines are never filtered at bottling. Togni's ability to harvest ripe, sweet fruit is evident in the 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine with awesome intensity. It may be the most opulent of the four vintages (1990 - 1993).

According to Togni, 1990 produced his smallest crop, which may account for the wine's extraordinary concentration and intensity. It exhibits ripe fruit buttressed by sweet toasty oak, and jammy black-cherry and blackcurrant flavors. The wine is just beginning to open up and strut its stuff. Togni's Cabernet Sauvignon, generally made from a Bordeaux-like blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, and aged 22 months in small French oak casks of which 25-40% are new, is one of the richest, most complex Cabernets made in California.

The first Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon vintage was 1983, a wine that remains not only young, but one of the top wines from this unimpressive vintage for most other Napa wineries.

Rating 97 RP - 2001 Philip Togni Cabernet - 97 pts! Togni's 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon explodes onto the palate with layers of dark fruit, roasted coffee beans, autumn leaves and spices. This is an immensely satisfying wine graced with striking inner sweetness and a vibrancy that will drink well for another 15+ years. The density of the fruit at ten years of age is remarkable. The 2001 is a re-release from the estate's library. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2027. This is a breathtaking set of wines from Philip, Birgitta and Lisa Togni. Philip Togni hardly needs an introduction to lovers of fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Since his epic 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon at Chappellet, Togni has crafted a series of impeccable, breathtaking wines. It is amazing to consider that Togni's wines remain so reasonably priced when an endless number of new wineries with no track record seem to pop up every day with first releases well over $100 a bottle. The winery is very much a family affair, with Birgitta and, increasingly, Lisa Togni running the show. On an earlier visit this year I tasted the 1987, a wine that remains dazzling for its purity. From time to time Togni releases a small amount of wines from their library, usually at the 10th anniversary of an important vintage. I also tasted the 2008s, sleeper wines from an under-the-radar vintage that will thrill those who have the patience to cellar them. The Cabernet Sauvignon (here referred to as the Main Label) generally includes a dollop of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate's Tanbark Hill is a second selection made from the barrels that don't go into the Cabernet Sauvignon. All of the wines see approximately 40% new oak from four different tonneliers. Readers who want to learn more about the 2011 harvest at Togni may want to take a look at my video interview with Philip and Lisa Togni on www.erobertparker.com.
