Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, or DRC as it is commonly known, is easily Burgundy's most world renown and most collectible wines in the world. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-Romanée, the Domaine makes wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the Côte d'Or. The most famous comes from the eponymous Romanée-Conti vineyard, and on average is the most expensive wine in the world.
The Domaine makes mostly Pinot Noir-based wines from 28 hectares (69 acres) of grand cru vineyard – represented alongside Romanée-Conti are La Tache, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg in Vosne-Romanée; Corton-Bressandes, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Renardes in Corton; and Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux. Le Montrachet and Batard-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune make DRC's only Chardonnay-based white wines.
Of course, La Romanée-Conti is the Domaine's most famous asset, and the amount of wine made from less than 2ha (5 acres) of land amounts to just 6000 bottles a year. The vineyard has a long history, dating back to the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in the 13th Century. It took on the Romanée name in 1631, and the Conti in 1760. In 1869, it was obtained by Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, who left it to his great grandchildren upon his death. It was then that the Société-Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was established to avoid Napoleonic inheritance laws.
Today, DRC is owned in part by the de Villaine family and in part by the Leroy family. Aubert de Villaine is the figurehead of the company now – although it was famously run by Lalou Bize-Leroy for a time, until a dispute saw her ousted from control. The Leroy family is now represented by Henri-Frederic Roch.

Burghound | 100 BH - This gets my vote as the greatest La Tache after the 1978 and hopefully an even longer-lived and more complete wine. It is a candidate for the "wine of the vintage" in this highly esteemed Burgundy vintage. The saturated dark ruby/purple color is followed by a developing bouquet that only hints at what will eventually emerge. There is an extraordinary amount of black fruits in the nose as well as a floral component and that exotic Asian spice/smoky scent that the DRC routinely obtains. The new oak takes a back seat to the exceptional quantity of fruit. Full-bodied with noticeable ripe sweet tannin this expansive wine represents an extraordinary expression of Pinot Noir. In spite of the wine's structure it is hard to resist drinking. RP ("a great vintage for La Tache but several others are its equal including 1991 and 1999" - AdV). Stunning massive full-on classic La Tache nose that displays almost unbelievable complexity so with many different elements that it is impossible to even begin to describe them all the primary components include ethereal and still fresh pinot fruit clove knock out spiciness anise hoisin soy and a trace of earth but these elements only hint at the sheer depth. The flavors are big rich refined classy penetrating and superbly powerful yet everything is in perfect balance and there is more than sufficient seve to balance off the still considerable tannins. The finish is intense pure and so long that it is haunting I can literally still taste this wine days later after I've had it because it has such a dramatic and emotional impact. This is one of the finest perhaps even the finest young Burgundy I have ever been privileged to try and it only seems to get better with each passing year. In short this is absolutely brilliant. Consistent notes. BH |
