1990 DRC Richebourg Burgundy

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, or DRC as it is commonly known, is easily Burgundy's most world renown and most collectible wines in the world. Based in the Burgundy village of Vosne-Romanée, the Domaine makes wines from eight different grand cru vineyards that span the length of the Côte d'Or. The most famous comes from the eponymous Romanée-Conti vineyard, and on average is the most expensive wine in the world.

The Domaine makes mostly Pinot Noir-based wines from 28 hectares (69 acres) of grand cru vineyard – represented alongside Romanée-Conti are La Tache, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg in Vosne-Romanée; Corton-Bressandes, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Renardes in Corton; and Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux. Le Montrachet and Batard-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune make DRC's only Chardonnay-based white wines.

Of course, La Romanée-Conti is the Domaine's most famous asset, and the amount of wine made from less than 2ha (5 acres) of land amounts to just 6000 bottles a year. The vineyard has a long history, dating back to the Abbey of Saint-Vivant in the 13th Century. It took on the Romanée name in 1631, and the Conti in 1760. In 1869, it was obtained by Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, who left it to his great grandchildren upon his death. It was then that the Société-Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was established to avoid Napoleonic inheritance laws.

Today, DRC is owned in part by the de Villaine family and in part by the Leroy family. Aubert de Villaine is the figurehead of the company now – although it was famously run by Lalou Bize-Leroy for a time, until a dispute saw her ousted from control. The Leroy family is now represented by Henri-Frederic Roch.

Burghound

Burghound RP 96 - The Richebourg is exceptionally fragrant with aromas of sweet jammy raspberries plums oriental spices and new oak all of which soar from the glass. It is crammed with fruit with a fat opulent texture reminiscent of the 1985. The finish is rich authoritative and long. The tannins are firm but appear less noticeable and softer than those of the Romanee St.-Vivant. The DRC 1990s all of which were bottled in April/May are among the deepest colored wines from this domaine that I have tasted in the last decade. Moreover they are firmly structured with significant tannins from both the vintage and from the aging in 100% new oak barrels. For the fortunate few who have had the discretionary income to afford the other great vintages of the DRC from the eighties 1980 1983 1985 1988 and 1989 the question is - are the 1990s superior? I am not sure they are any better than the 1980s 1985 and 1988s but they undoubtedly represent a classic concentrated long-lived style of wine. Moreover all of these wines should have a more graceful evolution and broader window of drinkability than the tannic 1988s as well as potentially greater longevity than the succulent and opulent 1985s. All of these offerings are outstanding with that tell-tale complex exotic fragrance that the DRC routinely achieves. NOTE: Prices had not been released (the wines will arrive in early 1993). I have inserted the same prices asked for the 1989 vintage as an approximation of what these wines will fetch. RP High-toned fruit with fresh bright blackberry fruit aromas and the barest trace of secondary character to the tight very ripe beautifully complex flavors. There is still quite a bit of tannin still to resolve though this has excellent density of extract and solid balance. Rich long and impressive if not especially detailed. Another recent bottle tasted in Burgundy was fresher than the one at the big Richebourg retrospective held in '01. A very impressive effort that will live for decades. Consistent notes. BH
