Futo Wines began in 2002 when Tom and Kyle Futo purchased Oakford Vineyards. Oakford, a 40 acre property with 7 acres of vineyard, had been established in the 80’s. In 2004, an adjoining 117 acre parcel was added to the property, of which 6 acres were planted to vineyard under the direction of David Abreu and winemaker Mark Aubert. Next, architect Howard Backen was called upon to design the winery. The winery was completed in time to receive the 2008 harvest. Also that year, Jason Exposto was hired to manage the day-to-day winemaking.

By 2010, full winemaking responsibilities were handed to Jason. Late in 2011, the Futos completed the purchase of a property in the eastern hills of Stags Leap District. This 40 acre property included a 9 acre Cabernet vineyard planted in 1986. Today, we are proud of the point to which we have come, but remain steadfast on continuous improvement.

Robert Parker

Rating 98 RP - These proprietary reds are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2007 is the finest wine yet produced at Futo. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, a whopping 33% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, it boasts a dense purple color as well as a gorgeously sweet bouquet of blue and black fruits, spring flowers, and crushed rocks, full-bodied power allied to compelling elegance, and a layered, multidimensional personality. There is plenty of depth in this beauty, and it is no doubt capable of putting on lots of weight and complexity given the Cabernet Franc component. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 20-25 years. This small 12-acre vineyard on the western hillsides of Oakville has hit the ground running. Their debut release, 2004, has been followed by impressive wines in every subsequent vintage. Proprietor Tom Futo and winemaker Mark Aubert have quickly produced a thrilling group of wines. Sadly, only about 500 cases are produced currently, but the quantity should rise to 1,000 cases after the vineyard comes into full production. RP
