2000 Le Pin Bordeaux Rare Magnum- 98 pts!

Le Pin is a tiny 6-acre property in the Pomerol district of Bordeaux. It was created in 1979 by the Thienpont family (owners of nearby Vieux Château Certan), and quickly rose to prominence to vie for the title of most expensive wine in the world.

The 100 percent Merlot wine is extremely concentrated and lush; it can often be drunk young but is best with a decade of aging.

The Le Pin vineyard is south-facing and sits on well-drained gravel and sand soils which give extremely low yields. There is also a small amount of Cabernet Franc planted. However, this not used in the Le Pin wine, and is gradually being replaced by Merlot.

Le Pin is named after two pine trees at the vineyard. There is no true château on the property, though a new winery was opened in 2011, replacing an old farmhouse basement.

Robert Parker 98 RP - Exotic opulent extravagant and impossible to resist the 2000 Le Pin is an explosive virtually perfect example of this estate. Dense purple-colored with luxurious levels of extract and richness this intense unctuously-textured black fruit-filled Pomerol is thick enough to drink with a spoon. Revealing abundant tannin and definition for such a young Le Pin it is typical of many of the blockbuster but backward and tannic 2000 Pomerols. It is a great wine for multi-millionaires who are able to latch onto a few bottles.

Antonio Galloni Rating The 2000 Le Pin is a vintage that I have not tasted for a decade or so. It has an exotic bouquet of vivacious red fruit, kirsch, black truffle, rose petals and orange blossoms. It just feels a little smudged against the 2001. The medium-bodied palate delivers sweet, ripe tannins, fleshy, orange-peel-infused red fruit, a little balsamic and touches of hoisin. The vibrant finish is reminiscent of the legendary 1982 or perhaps the 1989.
Wine Spectator Rating 96 WS - Distinctive, with a flash of menthol giving way to a beam of lightly mulled raspberry fruit that carries on through the finish, easily holding sway over the hints of bramble, licorice snap and warm plum compote. Just a touch sedate in feel, perhaps, but if you were a wine with this kind of fruit to burn, wouldn't you just kick back and let it groove too?
