Les Chaumes is a large Premier Cru climat located at the southern end of the Vosne-Romanée appellation in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. This vineyard, which is lower on the Côte d'Or slope than many of the appellation's most famous vineyards, is planted entirely to Pinot Noir. Les Chaumes Premier Cru wines are full bodied and supple, but not as refined as their Grand Cru neighbors.
The 6.5 hectare (16 acre) vineyard is just south of the village of Vosne-Romanée itself, on the border of the Nuits-Saint-Georges commune to the south. Les Chaumes shares a small portion of its northwestern border with the La Tache Grand Cru vineyard, with the Premiers Crus Aux Malconsorts above it to the west and Clos des Reas below to the east.
Les Chaumes' terroir is greatly influenced by its position on the slope, in terms of both soil and the mesoclimate felt in the vineyard. The limestone-based marl under the vineyard is deeper and richer than in the climats further up the Côte d'Or.
The Pinot Noir vines here tend to be slightly more vigorous than in Aux Malconsorts, and growers must prune carefully to ensure berry quality is not compromised. This said, the soil is still of a high quality and warrants the climat's inclusion in the list of Vosne-Romanée Premier Crus.
The slope's gentle easterly aspect is well suited to grape growing, providing a homogenous exposure to sunlight during the day. Les Charmes is one of the warmer climats in the area, and thus among the first to be harvested.

Burghound | A very fresh and distinctly floral nose also evidences pretty spice notes on the mix of purple fruit aromas. This is silky smooth, even satiny and while the mid-palate is not especially concentrated, the purity of the middle weight flavors is extraordinary. There is a lovely sense of harmony to the balanced and understated finish. |
