2016 Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Musigny "Les Amoureuses" Burgundy
Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is a Burgundian wine producer based in Chambolle-Musigny. It is particularly well-known for its Musigny Grand Cru wine which is regarded as a benchmark for that vineyard. While the estate is most closely associated with Pinot Noir wines from Chambolle-Musigny,
A few years ago, my brother, Peter, put it perfectly: “In winemaking, Fred is seeking the absence of Fred.” There is no greater respect for terroir than to seek its purest revelation by erasing not so much the self, but traces of the self, the noticeable self. Winemaking without a footprint.

Robert Parker 92+ RP - Mugnier's vines in La Combe d’Orveau were so badly frosted this year that the 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Village Trente-Deux is derived exclusively from the lieu-dit Les Plantes, supplemented by two barrels of Musigny itself. The resulting wine is very special indeed, and the name that distinguishes it this year pays tribute to Mugnier's thirty-second harvest. Wafting from the glass with aromas of wild berries, rose petal, currant leaf and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with unusual power and concentration, its deep core of vibrant fruit framed by fine but firm structuring tannins. Anyone lucky enough to find a bottle or two should plan on forgetting them for a decade or more.

Burghound 94 BH - Here too there is a whiff of reduction though here it's sufficiently subtle to still allow the spicy and overtly floral nose of red cherry, plum, sandalwood and a hint of exotic tea to be appreciated. There is both fine richness and energy to the beautifully textured and delineated middle weight flavors that possess a satiny mouthfeel while delivering excellent length on the impeccably well-balanced and superbly long finish. Like the Chambolle villages this is a relatively powerful incarnation of this wine as it's less fine than usual though still most impressive in its fashion.
