“The 1998 Clos Fourtet is a vintage that I have not encountered for many years. This has a superb bouquet: very fresh and vibrant with hints of black olive tapenade infusing the black fruit, more estuarine than other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, elegant for a '98 Right Bank. A keen line of acidity maintains tension throughout. There is just a touch of pencil lead on the finish. This is drinking beautifully and comes recommended. Tasted at the Clos Fourtet vertical in April 2023.”

Clos Fourtet
1998 Bordeaux Blend, St EmillionDuring the 20th Century, the estate was owned by several of the famous wine families of the region, but was bought in 2001 by the Cuvelier family, who also own Château Poujeaux.
The 18.5 hectare (45 acre) vineyard is planted mostly to Merlot (85 percent), with 10 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 5 percent Cabernet Franc on clay soils over limestone. The extensive cellars are underground, cut into the limestone bedrock, giving ideal conditions for maturation.
