2003 Domaine Pegau Reserve Châteauneuf-du-Pape - 98 Pts!

The Domaine & Château Pegau are attached to a traditional culture that enhances the expression of the terroirs, winegrowing & winemaking. The objectives are to learn, understand and adapt to a new acquisition in order to successfully develop quality wines, to give expression, typicity and the "PEGAU" identity.

The Domaine du Pégau uses 13 and more grape varieties, some of which are available in two colors such as Grenache Blanc and Red. Grenache noir is present at about 70% on the terroir of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOP.  It is the grape variety which makes up 80% of the Domaine du Pégau vineyards. Its main characteristics are a perfect expression of the three terroirs where it is present. Grenache will be expressed by its power, its roundness, its warmth and its range of spices.

The Domaine du Pégau completes its panoply of grape varieties with Syrah with a violet scent and its consistency in the mouth. The Mourvèdre with wild and rustic aromas guarantees long aging.

Robert Parker

Robert Parker 98 RP - The magical 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee brings to mind a richer more alcoholic version of their 1990. The 2003's dense plum/purple color is followed by flamboyant aromas and flavors of roasted meats spicy herbs pepper blackberries and cedar-tinged kirsch-like fruit. Unctuously-textured with low acidity high glycerin as well as alcohol 16+% and a monster finish it displays enormous concentration silky tannin and no hard edges. This remarkable traditionally-styled Chateauneuf du Pape will be drinkable young yet should age effortlessly for two decades or more.
