2016 Chateau Margaux Bordeaux - 99 Pts!
Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognized as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world.

It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tannic concentration may be exceptional, it’s rare to detect astringency.

The great vintages are distinguished by their formidable ability to move us. The lesser vintages give pleasure to wise enthusiasts. They offer the advantage of evolving very rapidly and, reveal, after a few years, instead of power, this subtlety that is the prerogative of great terroirs.

Château Margaux has an extraordinary ability to evolve. Over the years, it has developed a finesse, an aromatic complexity and a remarkable presence on the palate.

Rating RP99 - Am I being too stingy with the 2003 Chateau Margaux? A wine of extraordinary complexity and intensity it reveals a deep purple color a style not unlike the 1990 Margaux possibly even more concentrated a velvety texture and notes of spring flowers interwoven with camphor melted licorice creme de cassis and pain grille. Not a blockbuster it offers extraordinary intensity as well as a surreal delicacy/lightness. There is riveting freshness to this offering which tips the scales at a lofty for this estate 13.5% alcohol as well as an alluring sweetness and accessibility. It probably will tighten up over the next few years. Nevertheless it is a profound Chateau Margaux that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1990. RP

Robert Parker Rating RP99 - Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Château Margaux (blended of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot) sashays out of the glass with glamorous red currants, candied violets, kirsch and crushed blackcurrants scents followed by notions of tilled black soil, forest floor, cast iron pan and cigar box with subtle wafts of lavender and oolong tea. Medium-bodied, mineral laced accents hover over the palate with an ethereal sensation of weightlessness, yet it is super intense with layers of red and black flavors supported by a firm texture of silt-fine tannins, finishing wonderfully fragrant and incredibly long.
Antonio Galloni Rating 99 AG - A gorgeous, captivating bouquet gives the 2016 Margaux an irresistible allure. Weightless and yet wonderfully persistent, in the way only the château's wines can be, the 2016 Grand Vin is a wine of exceptional breeding and pedigree. So many wines in this vintage are obvious, but Margaux is a wine that takes time to discover, like a great book or piece of music. Shades of tobacco, cedar, mint, licorice and bright, red-toned fruit reveal themselves over time. And yet it is a sense of total harmony and seductiveness that elevates Margaux into the stratosphere in 2016.
Wine Spectator Rating WS97 - Beautifully rendered, with a lush and seamless flow of cassis, steeped cherry, warmed raspberry and gently mulled blackberry fruit flavors gliding through. Light lilac, savory, mesquite and mineral accents underline the finish, adding additional texture and length. Deep and long, with sublime definition and gorgeous fruit.
