2002 Peter Michael Belle Cote Chardonnay - 95-98 pts!
One of the most exciting in California, this beautiful winery is owned by Englishman Sir Peter Michael. When he launched this winery, Michael had the foresight originally to hire the brilliant Helen Turley to oversee the winemaking. The current vineyard/winemaking team, Nicolas Morlet whom took over from his brother Luc, shares Ms. Turley's winemaking philosophy.

The present as well as upcoming releases are irrefutably brilliant wines. Peter Michael produces amazing single vineyard Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc as well. Peter Michael Winery remains a family-owned estate that is now run by Peter's son Paul. Only a small number of cases reach the retail market as the majority are set aside for the mailing list and long-term restaurant clientele.

Rating 95 - The 2002 Chardonnay Belle Cote (2,780 cases) is a big offering. Filled with pure tropical fruit characteristics, it is a full-bodied, exotic Chardonnay offering up tremendous notes of smoky hazelnuts as well as lychee nuts presented in a ripe, gorgeously balanced style with a decidedly California personality, but with more definition than most California Chardonnays of this size and intensity. It is made primarily from the old Wente clone of Chardonnay planted on clay-dominated soils. RP
