2005 Peter Michael La Carriere Chardonnay - 93 pts!
One of the most exciting in California, this beautiful winery is owned by Englishman Sir Peter Michael. When he launched this winery, Michael had the foresight originally to hire the brilliant Helen Turley to oversee the winemaking. The current vineyard/winemaking team, Nicolas Morlet whom took over from his brother Luc, shares Ms. Turley's winemaking philosophy.

The present as well as upcoming releases are irrefutably brilliant wines. Peter Michael produces amazing single vineyard Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc as well. Peter Michael Winery remains a family-owned estate that is now run by Peter's son Paul. Only a small number of cases reach the retail market as the majority are set aside for the mailing list and long-term restaurant clientele.

Rating RP93 - The 2005 La Carriere 1900 cases is sensational and showing much better than it did last year and then it was pretty stunning. This wine has terrific fresh acidity that buttresses the lemon and orange blossom notes mixed with honeyed pear and hints of peach and nectarine. A gorgeous mineral-laced Chardonnay it should drink nicely for 5-7 years. This 121-acre estate with 114 producing acres of vineyard all located in Knight's Valley continues to be at the top of their game and I can't recommend the wines highly enough. I was surprised when I showed up at Peter Michael to find both Nicolas Morlet who replaced his brother Luc and Luc Morlet himself were at my tasting. It seems that Luc is still doing consulting work with his brother firmly entrenched at the winery. This is still one of the best-run wineries in the world and one might quibble over the fact that there are so many different cuvees of Chardonnay but they are all subtly different in style/personality. The Morlets proclaimed to me that essentially there is very little difference in the character of the Chardonnays in 2005 and 2006 except they thought the acid levels were slightly higher in 2005 and the 2006s were riper. In any event these are sensational Chardonnays and readers couldn't go wrong no matter which one they buy. RP
