Shafer Vineyards is a family-owned wine producer in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley. It is particularly known for its Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, regarded as one of the very finest wines in California. With the first wines appearing in 1978, Shafer Vineyards is one of the founding estates of – and a benchmark in quality for – the Stags Leap District AVA. The scores for Hillside Select have been incredibly consistent in the 97 to 100 point range.
Shafer has around 140 acres of vines in the Stags Leap District, spread out across several vineyards. The Hillside Estate vineyard has shallow, free-draining soils tha produce small, intensly flavored berries. The best blocks are used to make the Hillside Select, a plummy, cherry-laden wine with ripe tannins that will age well for a decade or more.

Rating | RP99 - The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is fabulous. I initially rated this wine 92-94 but out of bottle it is awesome! It reveals a saturated color similar to the 1994. While the aromatics are more restrained the wine boasts plenty of black currants lead pencil mineral and pain grille scents. Deep with spectacular purity ripeness and richness and far more expansiveness and depth than it possessed a year ago this wine offers a classic juxtaposition of power and elegance. It will take a few years to come around but wow what a wine! Anticipated maturity: 2003-2025. Since the 1991 vintage one of the stars of the Cabernet Sauvignon sweepstakes has been Shafer's Hillside Select. Approximately 2000-2200 cases of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon are produced. The wine is aged in 100% new oak for 30 months. Recent vintages have all been spectacular. In short attempting to decipher qualitative differences between them is akin to splitting hairs. I just hope that Cabernet lovers have the discretionary income and accessibility to cellar a few bottles. |
