2004 Sloan Estate Cabernet - 98 pts!
Sloan Estate, perched on the eastern hills of Rutherford across 40 spectacular acres, overlooks the Napa Valley floor at elevations ranging from 875 to 990 feet above sea level. The 13 acres under vine were planted in 1997 on a mineral-rich, porous soil of fractured volcanic rock and sandy loam. The perfect blend of white tufa soil, a cool marine influence, and generous sun exposure forms the ideal site for growing fruit of a distinct quality and crafting exceptional wines that are compelling expressions of these elements.

Robert Parker

Rating 98 RP - The 2004 Sloan's spectacular inky/purple/garnet color is followed by notes of high quality espresso roast, chocolate, black currants, truffles and a striking minerality. Full-bodied and super-rich with that roasted character that one finds in Cote Rotie and some of the great Haut-Brions from Pessac-Leognan, this full-bodied, rich 2004 is a super-star of the vintage. Although the tannins are elevated, they are extremely sweet and well-integrated. This spectacular 2004 is performing even better now than it did following bottling. It is also one of the more developed and evolved vintages of Sloan, no doubt because that was the nature of the 2004 vintage. RP The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon about 400 cases or so boasts that scorched earth roasted coffee chocolatey black currant and cedary nose full-bodied flavors sweet but high tannins and a textured mouthfeel with tremendous complexity. It has an enormous upstream potential of 20-30 years. It is relatively accessible for a Sloan wine but I would still give it 2-3 years of bottle age. This fabulous 13-acre vineyard on a 60-acre tract high on the hillsides above the Auberge du Soleil has a superstar team in place - viticulturalist David Abreu winemaker Martha McClellan the wife of Harlan Estates' Bob Levy and of course who else but Michel Rolland to do some consulting work. Proprietor Stuart Sloan seems content to produce well under 400-500 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon which is virtually nothing from a vineyard of this size and let the market fight over the tiny production. Hopefully they will eventually get close to 1000 cases but I wouldn't be so sure. Certainly everything produced to date has been impeccable often flirting with perfection.
