Sine Qua Non is one of California's most famous wine producers. Based just north of Los Angeles in Ventura County, and with most of its vineyards in Santa Barbara, it eschews the usual image of top California wine as being only from Napa Valley. That is not the only thing eschewed at Sine Qua Non – the same wine is rarely made more than once, turning the idea of the American icon wine on its head.
Next of Kyn is the newest venture of Manfred and Elaine Krankl, the couple behind the cult winery Sine Qua Non, based on California's Central Coast. The always innovative and envelope-pushing Krankls say they named their new label Next of Kyn because although related to SQN, it is nevertheless its own new enterprise. They say they also hope that one day one of their five children will take over Next of Kyn, making it a part of the SQN family in the most fundamental way. The 2007 Next of Kyn was their first vintage, and the Krankls say they will not necessarily have an annual release. It will depend on such factors as the available grape harvest. The 2007 is 92% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 2% Roussanne, most of which came from their own very small parcel in the Santa Rita Hills. The wine is released only to the Krankl's mailing list.

| Rating | 98+ RP - Composed of 38% Syrah, 33% Grenache, 16% Touriga Nacional, 7% Mourvadre and 6% Petite Sirah, using 43% whole clusters, the 2014 Cumulus Vineyard #8 has a deep garnet-purple color and slightly reticent nose to begin of black cherries, mulberries and black soil with suggestions of menthol, tobacco, incense, sandalwood and chocolate box, plus a fragrant undercurrent of violets. Firm, grainy tannins frame the full-bodied, muscular palate with stacks of flavor layers, finishing with great delineation and finesse. Forget this beauty for three to four years and enjoy drinking it over the next 20+. RP |

| Robert Parker Rating | 100 RP - Manfred Krankl notes that the 2018 Cumulus Vineyard No. 12 represents a shift away from earlier cuvées that were dominated by the Syrah grape. This iteration is composed of 47.7% Syrah, 23.4% Grenache, 21.3% Petite Sirah, 5.6% Mourvèdre and 2 % Petit Manseng. The 2018 also comes entirely from the Next of Kyn estate vineyard Cumulus. It was made using 41% whole clusters and matured around 32 months in 34% new French oak (the remaining barrels were one to three years old). Deep ruby-purple in color, it blossoms slowly to aromas of cassis, lilac, coffee beans, dried mint and bouquet garni. The full-bodied palate is powerful yet elegant, its concentrated fruits balanced by grainy tannins and fresh acidity that highlights its floral perfume on the long finish. It was bottled on May 6, 2021, and tasted on May 24, 2022. Around 380 cases and 222 magnums were made, sold as part of a four-bottle set with one bottle of Touriga Nacional. |
