It began in the late 1970s, initially as a garage project by Ed Selyem and Burt Williams in Forestville, a community in Sonoma County. In 1981 the pair – who were neighbors – officially named their project Hacienda Del Rio and established it as a legal winery. Two years later, the release of their first commercial vintage (1981) coincided with a cease-and-desist order from Hacienda Winery, leading them to change their name to Williams Selyem.

Williams Selyem found its success buying and bottling single-vineyard wines, with Pinot Noir as the focus. Single-vineyard wines were not new to California, but the first for Williams Selyem was its 1985 Rochioli Vineyard Pinot Noir.

While Pinot Noir dominates production, Williams Selyem also makes a small amount of Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and a Port-style fortified dessert wine. These offerings vary in production from year to year but many also carry single-vineyard designations.

Robert Parker Rating 92 RP - The brilliant 2001 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard (planted with the Martini clone, Dijon clones and the well-known Oregon clone known as Wadensvil) is a rich, Volnay-like effort. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied a sumptuous bouquet of juicy black fruits intermixed with earth, wood, and flowers. Pure, vibrant, and medium to full-bodied.
Antonio Galloni Rating Good full ruby-red. Perfumed, precise aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, cassis and violet; an essence of Sonoma Coast pinot. Then juicy and urgent but tightly wound, with notes of cola and spice. A rather powerful, oaky, slightly aggressive wine, finishing with big but sweet tannins and good length. The large crop level of the vintage may have had the effect of softening the tannins.
Wine Spectator Rating Very complete, with a fresh array of earth, mineral, black cherry, plum and a hint of mocha, displaying a tight focus, revealing extra flavor facets that show depth and richness.
