Paul Hobbs Winery was founded in 1991 by established winemaking consultant Paul Hobbs. Located in Sebastopol in Sonoma County, the winery specializes in single-vineyard varietal wines made from Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Chardonnay. Hobbs already had an impressive resumé as a consultant before establishing his own winery, which has gone on to receive significant recognition.
Paul Hobbs started his career working for Robert Mondavi in 1978, and was involved with the creation of Opus One – the collaboration between Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of the Bordeaux first growth Mouton Rothschild. Hobbs consulted with Simi Winery and championed the Argentinian wine industry while at Bodega Catena Zapata. The connections Hobbs made allowed Paul Hobbs Winery to achieve financing in a difficult period when California was suffering from phylloxera in the early 1990s.

Robert Parker | RP98 - A compelling potentially legendary effort there are 896 cases of the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard To-Kalon. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a classic Cabernet nose of tobacco smoke creme de cassis licorice and lead pencil. It boasts massive body great purity loads of intensity as well as concentration and a nectar-like unctuosity on the mid-palate and finish. This tannic unevolved baby tastes like a California version of a Pauillac first-growth. It's that special! Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. I visited Paul Hobbs at his new winery which should give him greater ability and flexibility to exploit some of northern California's finest vineyards. Hobbs one of my favorite winemakers has an impressive resume having worked at some of the better northern California wineries. He continues to work for some of the better South American producers. His 2001s and 2002s represent his finest portfolio yet. In spite of his affable down-to-earth personality this guy is clearly driven and gives meticulous thought to every decision he makes. His wines are the result of a winemaking philosophy that includes only indigenous yeasts for fermentation full malolactic for whites and reds and no clarification ... meaning no fining or filtration. Hobbs has culled out some of northern California's great sites for Pinot Noir Chardonnay Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. I suppose it is only a matter of time before he turns his attention to Syrah which seems like a natural progression given what he has already accomplished. |
