1970 Chateau Latour Pauillac Bordeaux Double Magnum

Château Latour is one of Bordeaux's – and the world's – most famous wine producers. It is situated in the southeast corner of the Pauillac commune on the border of Saint-Julien, in the Médoc region. Rated as a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it has become one of the most sought-after and expensive wine producers on the planet, and produces powerfully structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines capable of lasting many decades.

The site has been occupied since 1331, with a fort and garrison to guard the estuary. Several smallholdings began to grow vines, and wine from the site gained recognition from Montaigne as early as the 16th Century. The original tower no longer exists; the famous tower featured on the label was designed as a pigeon roost and built around 1620.

Wine Spectator 1970 Chateau Latour Pauillac Bordeaux Double Magnum One of the top two or three wines of the vintage (Petrus and Trotanoy are noteworthy rivals) this young magnificent Latour is still 5-10 years away from full maturity. The opaque garnet color is followed by a huge emerging nose of black fruits truffles walnuts and subtle tobacco/Graves-like scents. Full-bodied fabulously concentrated and intense with a sweet inner-core of fruit (a rarity in most 1970 Medocs) and high but well-integrated tannin this enormously endowed massive Latour should hit its prime by the end of the century and last for 2-3 decades thereafter. This is will be the longest-lived and potentially most classic wine of the vintage. Cream always comes to the top. RP Elegant and gorgeous to drink now. Peaked. Ruby red color with an amber edge. Lovely aromas of plum, berry and mint. Full-bodied, with currant, dried herb character. Medium finish.--Latour vertical. Drink now. WS
