“Consumers and critics alike should expect a fair bit of bottle variation in old wines, and looking at the previous notes in our database for this wine, that's compounded by now having been reviewed by three different critics. To my palate, this bottle of 1974 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection Lot F 1 Napa was in great shape—it was tasted at the winery, after all. Deep garnet in hue, with some bricking at the rim, it does show some aged characteristics of scorched leather and flambéed cherries but remains medium-bodied (13.2% alcohol), silky and elegant, adding notes of sandalwood on the finish. Drink this classic Old School Cabernet over the next few years and hope it's in as good condition as this bottle was.”

1974 Cabernet Sauvignon, OakvilleCharles Krug is the oldest commercially run winery in Napa Valley, California. Founded in 1861, the winery is located in the St Helena appellation and is owned by the Mondavi family. The most coveted wines include the flagship Vintage Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the best fruit from the vineyard holdings in Yountville.
Peter Mondavi Sr made Charles Krug into the legend that it is today. He introduced several innovations including research on cold fermentation, experimentation with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in what is now the Carneros region, cold, sterile filtration techniques, and aging wine in small, French oak barrels. Mondavi became President of Charles Krug in 1976, and was named one of the 12 "Living Legends" in 1999 by the Napa Valley Vintners Association. He died in February, 2016, leaving the winery to his sons Marc and Peter Jr.
